In Medford, Southern Oregon we are starting to hear quite a bit about green homes. It is starting to "line out" in several areas and it seems as though the goal is energy efficient housing for all, even current homeowners.
So far we have "certificates" for different levels of energy efficiency in new homes, including all or partial uses of "green" construction materials. There is a "certificate" or list of qualifications for existing homes in the works. Mortgage lenders and beginning to advertise loan products for these houses as well.
But Southern Oregon has a tradition of "off the grid housing" that is going to take a new turn. In the near future we are expecting developments that contain sustainable housing. This will be housing that is not off the grid, but it will give back to the power grid. These will be homes that create their own power. Its pretty exciting to see and hear about.
What I love the most is that the ecologists, recyclers and environmental activists that got their start in the activism years of the 60's adn 70's are now seeing their visions come full circle to reality.
Congratulations to all who are involved in the new green - sustainable housing movement. We waited a long time but the change is most welcome.
I would love to hear about community reaction to green and sustainable in YOUR area....what are people likeing aout the concept, what are they not liking! If you have sold green homes, are their owners satisfied and exicited or would they change something about their house?
Let me know,
