Why Real Estate?
I can only speak for myself, but I'd love to hear your reasons.
Why Real Estate?
Because, I've never found any thing more satisfying!
I am an amateur social anthropologist, I love watching people, in all their follies.
Because, in real estate every thing I've ever done has been good for my clients. Where else can you leave every one better off for having dealt with you?
Because, I never accept "no" or "it can't be done!" Just because some one else can't do some thing doesn't bother me. In what other field can we have the independence to set our own limits! "There is always more than one way!"
Because,I've been able improve many lives. Not only my clients, but my real estate developments go no enriching countless others who'll never know me!
Why Real Estate?
Because, there is no greater satisfaction improving lives! For me, after smashing my leg it meant returning to a very specialized version of where I started in lending. It gave me a chance to deal with 20 to 50 people for each of my REALTORS®. Today I sell a few books and teach!
It's what I know. I started investing in real estate in 1990 while a police officer. Then after being retired for injuries received in the line of duty I started a development company In San Diego. Well we all know what happened there. Once I landed on my feet in Austin I thought what do I know? I know financing and real estate. So here I am.
Heck, because shoveling horse dung at parades wasn't paying the bills. Then again...
I not only like your attitude, Bill ... I love it. This industry provides a wonderful way to help folks with the one thing that will never go away ... Real Estate, Homes, Land. I can only hope to be as good as it as your record proves that you were and are. Time will tell, but I plan on providing some happy times for anyone I work with before my time runs out.
"because shoveling horse dung at parades wasn't paying the bills" All you needed was some guidance! To bad we couldn't have shot the dung. I could have told you there are only two or three half days work at parades, dung pro's either work at a stable or Congress!
"I do it for the challenge and to help people. It's different every day and I love getting hugs from my happy clients after closings!!" Amen! "There is always more that one way!"
I've great memories of flying in to Fort Wayne! I never could find that airport, so I keep going back, each time they flash the runway lights at me. One day the head instructor ask me to fly a plane back from there, He had a new student in the front seat of a Sky Lane and me in the back. The kid was very nervous so to keep both hands available he handed me the mike to call in. The tower responded, hi Bill what are you flying today? Before I could speak they added glad to see you, we're flashing the lights! It's a wounder my instructor let me get my license later that week.
Why Real Estate? Why because I love making people happy, I love building relationships, I love Customer Service, and yes, I guess I love stress too. As one of my GRI instructors once said: "Selling Real Estate isn't easy, but it is not difficult". I think I've thought of those few words more times than I can count, especially when I am dealing with a difficult transaction or a lender who is not doing their job. It isn't easy, but it's not difficult. You just have to be like a dog on a bone and never give up.
Thanks for the great reminder of why we are in this crazy business. We all need positive thoughts during difficult times.
Hi Honey I have enjoyed our career in the real estate industry I don't think we could had the life experience doing anything else. Working for someone else is no fun.
40+ years ago when I started, there were few FEMALE real estate agents outside of housewives whose children were in school and there were VERY FEW in property management. The potential for a good income AND working for one's self has always been the draw for me as I am third generation real estate agent and real estate investor. The fact that there are now real estate DEGREES from colleges and universities is encouraging for our profession and in economies such as the one we have now, the poor agents will not survive and will go back to retail sales or web media where they came from.

I started about the same time 1969, but in the Midwest (Michigan) there seemed to be more women than men, but the men dormant sales, because they tented to be full time.
You've got a great list of schools, but I think there are many more. The University of Michigan has had a program since the mid '60s it was headed by Dan Page, CCIM from Lake George for many years, Western Michigan University had a BA and Master's program since the earlie '80s. I taught two classes for 11 symesters at the local community college, they offered 18 classes if I remember right, but didn't offer an AARE until after I left. UNLV (Las Vegas) offered a BA in real estate in the late 80's.
Bill - I think other careers would satisfy me, too! Doctor, private investigator, attorney... I think I am still in real estate because I tried it and I liked the challenge of being a business owner. I am still in it because I am good at it. It is never boring. You reap the rewards from what YOU create. Of course, helping people achieve their goals is a bonus! Thank you for your intriguing post.
As a people watcher myself I am always fascinated on each persons reaction to the same situation. That is why I also liked being a DJ, every person was different.
Bill I have been in sales for 34 years, but most of that time was in a different field. I don't know if I can really put my finger on why Real Estate will be my last career change, but I do know that I wish I have made the change many years before I did.
