Sometimes we get caught up in the daily business that we forget to take time out to socialize with fellow Realtors®.  A few weeks ago I received an invitation to an open house for Realtors®.  The invitation was set aside with good intentions of not attending.

Late this afternoon I decided to stop by the open house.  As usual, I arrived fashionably late or at Hawaiian time, halfway through the event.

Agents from many different companies were already there, standing around commiserating in friendly conversations.  Newest listings, price reductions and recent property sales were probably topics as well as the current real estate market.  I recognized many agents with whom I had completed transactions with and many who recently showed my listings.  Some were leaving or getting ready to leave.

I sat by a colleague with whom I recently conducted a transaction.  I represented the buyer and she the seller.  We both worked very hard in getting the transaction closed and communicated almost daily.

We spoke of each others family and of the recent Arizona Cardinals game.  After a while, my colleague excused herself as she would be going to play Mahjong.

As she was leaving, she turned back, hugged me and thanked me for such a smooth transaction.

The greatest compliment that any one agent can receive, is from another agent.

Hi Leolinda...You are so right.  Other Realtors know what a difference they can make in the transaction and appreciate it when we make it as smooth as possible.  You must have felt great when she told you how she appreciated the way your did your job.

This is a good reminder for all of us to praise those that have done there part well.

Janna, I guess the key is to just do the job the best you can without moaning and groaning and fess up if you cannot get it right.  Thank you for stopping by.

Kate, it was an excellent reminder for me too.

It's what makes our business unique. We are forced to work together and some agents show their true colors when you have a transaction with them. Your colors must of been bright and shining.

I know what you are saying. Whenever I think things may be going badly or in the wrong direction I will get another agent say something so nice it makes up for a week of non production.

I love seeing other agents socially.  I live in a small town of 15,000.  Half of us are agents...well, it feels like that many anyway.  We agents can really be a fun group.

I agree that a complement from another agent is a gratifying.  I believe that I put my all into everything I do when it comes to serving my clients.  Part of that is co-operating with the agent on the other side of the deal.  Of course each of us is doing our best to serve our client's best interest.  Co-operating with the other agent goes a long way to serve that end.  It doesn't always end with a cumbaya but I believe keeping my side of the stree and dealing with everyone with the highest regard leads to many good friendships in the realtor community.  Thanks for your article.

Leolinda -

This happens far to infrequently in our business!  Especially true during contentious negotiations, or delayed or lengthly closings.

It shouldn't, however.  Your co-brokers can make or break your business, and you need to set aside the time to thank them.

I attempt to do that at every closing.  Many are surprised by what I cansider to be a usual courtesy!

Thanks for sharing!

This is so true. I did a transaction with a seller agent a couple months ago and she was fantastic. I let her know during the deal how special she was, and it meant a lot to her. Praise for a job well done is so easy to do, and yet so meaningful to the recipient.

You are so right!  A few months back, after going through a difficult transaction, I told my broker how great the listing agent was to work with.  He asked me if she might want to make a change and work for our company.  At the same time, her broker called me and tried to recruit me!  We both stayed with our respective firms, but we felt so validated and extremely complimented.

Leolinda,

Like you I get caught in the marketing and selling of property that I do not take the time for that necessary socialization with other agents.  Even though our business is primarily a people business it also has a way of isolating us. I attended a mandatory association lockbox update yesterday and got to see and mix with some colleagues I hadn't seen for a while.  What a nice time, I did not get a hug :) but still enjoyed the time together with other Realtors.

Thank you for the reminder!

I always send thank you cards to all parties involved after a transaction is closed unless the service has been horrible...a hand-written one.  Title, buyer's agent, lender...

I actually got to send 2 out to REO agents in the last 6 months for the first time (not because I just started working REO's, but because I actually ran into 2 agents that actually did a splendid job).  I have been sending out thank you notes for 4 years now on almost every transaction.

Thanks for the reminder.

Wonderful story!  There are few agents who have moved me to do anything beyond say "thanks" at the closing, but when you run across those that go the extra mile and help to make a transaction smooth, it's worth more than just a word or two.  Those are the agents that I want to work with again and again and that I would love to have working alongside me in our office as well.

Fortunately, I am friends with several Brokers.  We not only feed off each other, we respect, like and appreciate each other.  We don't have the cut throat mentally that we are sometimes equated with in the mindset of the public.  We have eachothers' backs and offer helpful, insightful tips that in the end make our jobs easier.  Thanks for reminding me how important my agent friends are and how good it feels when one of them offers a heartfelt compliment.

Today I commented to my office mate how nice it is to complete a transaction and to not only be on good terms with the other agent but to hope to have another transaction with them.  It is a great compliment to receive praise from another agent.  The ones who are hard to deal with get a bad reputation pretty quickly.

9:02pm • #62

Most of my transactions have gone very smoothly and for those that didn't, it was a lesson on what not to do.  I run into more seasoned agents who feel it necessary to let you know how long they have been in the business.  They are still the ones who put dates in the blanks on the contracts that should read N/A.   There is always something to learn in this field so we should keep our minds open. Great job!!

Leolinda, what a nice tribute to our profession.  I totally agree.  I have two pending right now and I'm working with two exceptionally pleasant, professional, knowledgeable REALTORS.  As is my normal MO, after closing each will get a nice little token gift from me with a card thanking them for a "smooth transaction".

Over the years I've done this and each time the other agent has been so thrilled.  We need to tell each other when we do good.  The support and encouragement of our fellow REALTORS is priceless.
