It may be a year away but the pollsters have been watching the likely outcome of the Florida Governors race for some time.

Today it as announced that Republican candidate Bill McCollum has a double digit lead over the Democratic candidate Alex Sink.  In June McCollum had an 8 point lead. As of today it was 11 points.  McCollum leading Sink 46% to 35%. Five percent (5%) favor another candidate, and 15% are undecided.

McCollum leads by 14 points among men and by eight among women. In June, women voters were almost evenly divided between the two candidates.

Voters not affiliated with either major party favor McCollum by eight points, but 28% of these voters are undecided.

Bill McCollum is well known in Florida.  He has served in the U.S. Congress for 20 years.

Looks like the Florida race will be interesting to keep an eye on.

The political races are always interesting to watch.  McCollum is a career politician.  Sink was a bank president prior to becoming CFO.

Florida is an interesting state to watch this year.  My favorite race is the US Senate with outgoing Governor Crist challenged by Former Speaker of the Florida House Marco Rubio.

The establishment Republicans at the State and National level jumped on the Crist bandwagon within minutes of his announcement that he was a candidate.  Sitting Governor Crist seemed like the surest way to keep the Senate seat of Mel Martinez who resigned his seat early in the "R" column.

However, Mr Crist is what I would politely call a moderate Republican.  Other less kind authors have compared him to Arlen Specter, who attracts your attention, Bonnie, on a consistent basis.

Speaker Rubio is an attractive candidate who is bright, articulate, Hispanic (son of Cuban immigrants), consistent in his message and much more conservative in his views and his record than Mr Crist.

Florida has a system of closed party primaries.  The danger here is that a sharply contested Republican primary could produce a damaged candidate for the general election against the Democrat candidate for the Senate seat, expected to be Congressman Kermit Meek (FL 17 - D).

National forces have come to support Marco Rubio as the stronger conservative candidate, to include a cover photo and article from the National Review.

So Florida will have something for everybody (except, I hope, the Democrats) in 2010 with a number of races of national significance.

Another Republican candidate entering the race for Governor in Florida.

State Senator Paula Dockery from Lakeland is expected to announce her candidacy for the Republican nomination for Governor next week.

Paula had gained state wide exposure in the last legislative session for successfully challenging the establishment on railroad programs in Central Florida.  She stopped a sweetheart deal with CSX railroad and the State that she did not believe was in the public interest. The news coverage read well for her, but whether she has the depth for the Governor's race is yet to be seen.

Rob, When I lived in Fl I knew McCollum, not a personal level, but in his political position.  He is a popular figure in Fl.

Wallace - I have seen that.  I think they have stopped coming to Va. I saw McDonnell on TV last night.  He is confident but not making any predictions,

Wallace - read my other blog about Robin Hood.  Interesting protest Michell Bachmann is sponsoring nex Thursday at the Capitol in DC

Ah Ted, so you think Arlen attracts my attention do you?  You are right.  Time to retire.  You have no idea how much he has attracted my attention.  You know he is the author of the "magic bullet theory" don't you?

Arlen also said he would not vote for a health care bill with federally funded abortion.  Pelosi's bill has it - let's see if Arlen keeps his town hall promises.

I admit I do not know much about Rubio.  It will be a race to watch.  The more hats that go in the ring, the more people who become interested. With the number of seniors in Fl I would hope they would stop rocking and start watching.

Ted,  You need to keep us all informed about the Fl race.  I still have lots of friends there who can vote.  Many of them are passive political watchers.  I'd like to be better informed so I can pass along the word.
