When I was young, my wise old grandmother had this long, scraggly vine-type plant hanging in a basket on the back patio.

Hoya vine

I never really liked it because, well, because it was long and scraggly.

And it never bloomed!

If it's long and scraggly, at least it should bloom, and it would be really nice if those blossoms were beautiful, majestic, unusual, unique....

I guess you know that one day it bloomed:

Hoya

That's a flower from the genus Hoya. One of its common names is wax flower, and the common name does, indeed, describe the flowers. They feel very much like a hard wax, a candle for example.

Although the flowers last a very long time -- they're wax! -- and I've had many of them over the years, I've never been able to get mine to bloom. I'm a failure.

If you go to the San Diego Zoo, visit the Owen's Aviary, a tropical aviary, where many long, large hoyas seem to be blooming all the time. Maybe the law of averages applies here.

Russel, I'm not really awake yet, so I'm going to try my VIA coffee for the first time and hang out here on AR.  I always learn so much.  Thanks for the flowers, and have a great weekend.

Russel, my best friend had a hoya that was aged and it bloomed profusely in the south window of her home...must need alot of light. She gave me a start and I had blooms on it, but not like the mother plant! I love those little "nosegays"!!

Russel:  I was wondering what Georgetown University was going to have to do with your nature post.  I never knew there was a flower called a Hoya.  Neat.

Russel, it's beautiful. Are you fertilizing it and giving it the right light? I'm sure you're doing what you need to - it must be the plant's fault :)

Hey, Andrea - It makes me want to try harder with my own hoya.

Hey, Lou and Roy - Thanks for stopping by.

Hey, Brian - It looks tropical, and it is growing in one of the Zoo's tropical aviaries. Maybe mine needs higher humidity. Hmmm.

Hey, Sallie - Hope your coffee is good. I depend on a nice shower and my newspaper to wake me up.

Hey, Caren - Maybe mine just doesn't like me. Orchids and roses also don't like me, although I do have one weedy rose that grows where I don't want it, and I just cannot get rid of it. It grows and grows and grows, and blooms, too! But it doesn't look right in my cactus garden.

Hey, Terry - I wonder if they make good cut flowers since they are so waxy.

Hey, Al and Peggy - The flower spray does hang down.

Hey, Rita - Thanks for your kind words and for stopping by.

Hey, Carra - And one has to go regularly since plants bloom at different times of the year.

Hey, Kathy - Maybe we can start a "Mine never blooms" Group here at ActiveRain. LOL

Hey, Irene - It would make a good logo flower for someone.

Hey, Frank and Sharon - I like your attitude. Yes, it's the plant's fault! Ah-ha! Yep!
