"The Garden Isle" of Kauai in Hawaii

My mother was born in Nawiliwili town on the Island of Kauai on January 12, 1928. Nawiliwili is a little town outside of the the city, Lihue and its right by Nawiliwili Harbor. My mother had 7 sisters and one brother and they had a little Japanese country grocery store. My mother's stories of growing up were one of "the simple life". Nothing extravagant. Nothing too special. Except that she lived on the "Garden Isle".

The Na Pali Coast with its rugged cliff/coastline and mountain terrain has incredible views of five lush valleys, waterfalls, and ancient Hawaiian ruins (and there is a 11 mile trail for hikers) CLICK! MORE PICTURES

Waimea Canyon is like a mini Grand Canyon and the scenery is something to behold! Measuring 10 miles long, 1 mile wide and 3,500+ deep and were carved from floods and rivers from Mount Waialeale's summit. The lines in the walls are evident of many volcanic eruptions and flows throughout the centuries.

If you remember, back in my article on Hawaiian Legends - Nightmarchers, Menehune, and the Tiki Gods I mentioned when I was young that my cousin and I used to go to visit my Aunt. Well, the Waimea Canyon is in this area. So be sure to see the Menehune Ditch on Menehune Road while you're up there!

So, this is just another topic I picked mainly because it's from my memories of my childhood as well as many trips over there to visit my two Auntie's. (My Aunt Ane San is no longer here)

Sally, these photos are amazing. You are so lucky to call this home. I love it!

Steph: I haven't been to Kauai for a couple of years but of all the islands Kauai is the most beautiful as well as not too touristy! Way back in the 1970's there was ONE stop light on the whole island.

with this post I just took a deep sigh.... I Love love love Kauai.... I've had the absolute pleasure of travelling there 3 times in the past two years... all 3 trips were the most relaxed I had ever been... 2 weeks each time of nothing but beauty... calm and more beauty. Love Princeville golfing and Poipu... Restaurants... . Lizard Lounge.. and Roys are all to die for.... shopping ... and the Hyatt in Poipu is stunning there was also a great outdoor restaurant near there that was wonderful with a view to die for.

OMG I WANT AND NEED TO GO BACK NOW!!!!!!! After a very very long CRAPPY week thanks for taking me back too a "good" place

Desiree: You should share some pictures here! I have no idea what a Lizard Lounge is but my mom is deathly afraid of them! When she was irritating us as kids we would chase her around with one...ahhaha. You know what, we pay a hefty price to live here in our paradise....but I tell you what...I wouldn't have it any other way. I may not be rich but sure am rich with our life here!

I am going to do some searching see if i have some good ones you can use..... give me a couple of days to locate them on line.... have a great night

Desiree: I took it forgranted going to other islands and only taking pictures of family and friends. If i had only known I would want to just look at scenery in my older age...haha!

Sally - These photos are really beautiful and accurate. It really is this gorgeous. One of my great all time memories is flying over Waimea Canyon in a helicopter tour. Flying right up to a waterfall and backing out of the canyon. Wow. You just have to be there. Thanks for rekindling a great memory.

Ines: Are you going tomorrow too? I'm sad

Marlene: My aunt lived down the way a little on Menehune Road in Waimea....there was a Menehune Ditch and the old swinging bridge..this is a road you need to travel down! If it's one thing Hawaii does is give me a bunch of memories...and I live here! I lived in izmir, Turkey for two years and I have some neat memories of ruins and history there as well!

Sally-Kauai is our favorite place to island hop too (the big island is a close 2nd). The picture of the Na Pali coast is breathtaking. I love the fact that you cannot drive out there....only hiking. I am happy to see Nawilili Harbor too because I know that just on the other side of the harbor, behind the lighthouse is one of the nicest golf courses on Kauai called Kiele Lagoons! Me and my golf. The island is so laid back too and the people are friendly. Great restaurant there in Poipu Bay called Casa De Amicis. It is an old house in the middle of a residential district that was converted to a restaurant.

David: I think the house where my mom was born (and the little store) may be gone now. It was one of those old green plantation looking homes. I had some great times during my childhood checking out the places my mom grew up...went to school and visiting my aunties. My gramma (by time I met her I was already 10) was a little old Japanese lady and she lived in a little shack below my Aunt Ane San right outside of Lihue. She already had osteoporosis already and huched over from taking care of all those kids!

Sally, wow... I have traveled to Europe a few times. I think it is time after this piece that I travel west.. way west for me... Those pictures where amazing..

Sally - we're actually taking off to go in a few minutes - we'll be thinking about you and I'll take lots of pictures (eventhough my oldest one woke up with a fever.....can't those kids wait for those kind of things?) : )

Sally, now i see why your really happy, you live and work in paradise! the problem is i'm afraid to fly, otherwise i would be there in no time. I really enjoy reading and seeing your posts.

Sally, that picture of Waimea Canyon is unbeleivable!!!

Your mother was very lucky to have lived a simple life when she was growing up, today's world could do with more of that.

As usual, I feel like going straight to a travel website and booking tickets after I read your blog. You do an excellent job of bringing what's special to you to others. I love it!

Matt: You just may have to do that! I don't smoke cigars but we can go to dinner!

I ditto the comments about the canyon Sally. Did you take that? Amazing rainbow colors. Beautiful!

Teri: I just changed that one ...this one is clearer. I will be going to the other island more often now that we'll have the ferry! I'm running out of any pictures at this point. Going to show property today where there is gorgeous views of the ocean....will be back with more stories and more pictures!

It's just not fair - I want to go there, now! As a diver I'm especially tempted...

Jeff: One day, my friend. One day. I know I keep asking my husband if we can go to PA to visit. NOPE. He has no desire to go back and his gramma had to come here. She loved it and looked so much healthier by time she left!

Sally, I have always wanted to visit Hawaii. Those pictures are beautiful. Your love for the islands shines through in your posts. Your mom may have had a simple life but she grew up in paradise. How cool.

Hey Maggie! We came to Hawaii when I was 10 but have always lived on Oahu. I think Kauai is really old time and country living. Even now.

Wow Sally, I haven't been to Kauai in a long time. I am thinking that maybe we will take the new SuperFerry over with our car, when it gets here.

Randy: Us too! Then maybe we can just take the pooch. (wonder if they allow pets?) On second thought...on steroids and she is getting meaner....vet said can't do anything about it.

Sally, my ignorance is showing. I just assumed all the islands grouped together were called Hawaii. lol I think Kauai sounds like my speed. I'm not much of a big city gal, even though I grew up in NYC and still love it. I prefer a slower pace.

That pretty funny about visiting PA - if you're into history then it's a must, otherwise I vote for the ocean! OK, maybe I'm biased towards the ocean.

Maggie: And our biggest island is the island of Hawaii. All the islands are Hawaii (state) or the Hawaiian Islands. And I know once our ferry starts up we'll be going again!

Jeff: I love history..(we watch History channel too much haha)

Sally, I must say... you write some awesome posts about Hawaii. The pictures certainly don't hurt, either! Makes me want to vacation there again... and soon!

Eureka..........

Beautiful island, and I hope it's as slow paced as you say. Question-you mentioned a super highway/ferry, but Randy's comment makes me think it's not ready. Is there a way to get there other than by plane? Great childhood you had there....we don't always appreciate it till we're older, but heck you're having a Birthday :) :)

It's ready...I need to do a post...the last few days protestors prevented the superferry from going to Kauai and Maui....court action going on...big mess. Paddle a canoe? Hey...I was tripping the last three years...since I started AR my thinking has changed and I am going to be happy!
