I like fresh avocado but yuck! I'm disgusted with opening the dishwasher only to find yesterday's dinner still stuck to the silverware.

Do I need to apologize that this has nothing to do with real estate?

Anyway I had a bright idea yesterday. Dig out a flashlight, get down on my hands and knees and check out the inside of my trusty dishwasher than is never supposed to need repairing. You know...  courtesy of the folks who bring us the lonely Maytag guy.

Blech. Gunk, gunk and more gunk.

Ahhh, THAT'S WHY remnants of grapefruit pulp coat my glassware. And bits of cilantro redeposit on the pasta bowls.

Not only is the filter clogged, but the arm thingies barely spin and where there should be holes, I find three years of granite.

Back upstairs I'm sitting at my computer on a mission. After reading through mindless answers on Yahoo I revert to my cure for the world's ills. White vinegar.

Back downstairs I empty the dishwasher, all but three glasses filled with vinegar. I run it on the hottest longest cycle. (I never do anything half-way)

This morning I check it out. Gunk everywhere. Chunks of rock. Chalk. Black gravel. Sand. But I can see the heating element. Holes reopen and arms spin. Glassware sparkles. And the pink goo around the hinges disappeared.

Hmmm, I start to think. Could vinegar be a better choice for a rinse aid?

Now I'm no engineer. I'll be the first to admit I have broken several small appliances while "upgrading" them. So I thought I'd ask before I try this out. Do you think it's safe to fill the rinse aid reservoir with white vinegar?

Dishwashers are more expensive than the coffee maker I just killed so please can anyone advise? Who can help?

I'd ask the lonely Maytag guy but I'm thinking he's pretty busy these days.

Vickie, In three glasses sitting upright in the top tray.

And get this, while on my mission, I read rinse aids leave a residue on dishes and mixes in with our next meal. Blech. That got me thinking about filling the rinse aid reservoir with vinegar.

I would say that vinegar is great by itself to help clean things, but I really think that if you mix it with another chemical (detergent) then you're asking for trouble.  Not something I'd try.

Jim and Maria, That makes a lot of sense. On Yahoo Answers people were actually advising a mixture of bleach and vinegar. I knew enough to not do that!

Nutsy, Here's a fun game for you. Next time you come home from certifrying, tired and dirty, ask Mr. Boss to place three glasses of white vinegar in the top shelf of his dishwasher. Then you hop right into the bottom rack and tell the boss to turn on the extended cycle, the real hot one. Before you know it, you'll be clean and refreshed. Ms. Kate

White vinegar is supposed to be an miracle de-whateverizer.  I think I am going to use it in my espresso machine instead of the chemicals they want you to run through it.  Sounds like it is doing the trick in your dishwasher.

I could have told you that Kate.  No need to Google.  White vinegar is good on many appliances - coffee maker, cleaning the microwave (removes odors too), and disposal.  NOT good to clean the insides of the toaster or to take build up off your car battery...

Mrs Kate,

I understand that you are advertising that you are having a big barbecue. Please let me know the main course so I can make sure I get it done just right. I assume you require a trained chef.

Jane, just don't let it spill into mechanical parts. I assume that is why my coffee pot died a premature death. BUT! My dishwasher is now c-l-e-a-n. I discovered the problem. Due to Nevada's extremely hard water, the openings that sprayed out clean water had hardened with minerals. The vinegar unplugged them and the Maytag guy is again unemployed.

Jay, good to know. If I have any questions, I will call Croakster.

Nutsy, have you played in the dishwasher yet? I want you cleaned up before the bbq.

Kate,
I've never run vinegar through the rinse aid, but I have used it in the dishwasher in a couple of cups much the same way you did. Worked great for me, the dishwasher is spotless and sooo clean.

Sue, I will not go the route of putting it in the rinse aid reservoir because of what Jim and Maria pointed out. Mixing is never a good idea. I think as long as I run it empty with a cup of vinegar a couple of times a month, it will stay as nice as it looks tonight. I understood today why it was performing so poorly when I noticed its hardening of the arteries big time.

Kate,

Vinegar eh? I hadn't heard that one before, but for the hell of it, I'll try it.

Kate, what a great post and refreshing from the real estate blog I was expecting! Ha!

Maybe, just maybe, we can try vinegar on some of these short sale banks? Think that could work? We can run it throught their phones so they answer them? We can run it through their fax machines so they don't lose papers? We can put it in their coffee machines so when they drink their morning coffee their head is clear?

Man Kate, I think you're on to something big!!

Thanks for the laugh!

Terry, Cheap too. [not you, the vinegar.] :) :)

Diane, Hey you just made me laugh outloud! YES! A vinegar wash for all short sale execs like a HazMat spray. Spray them, soak them, unclog them... Kate

Hi Kate: My wife using vinegar and bleach in the washing machine to clean it.  And I loved Diane's comment too!

Matt, except I'd be cautious of the mix producing harmful fumes. Yes, Diane cracked me up too!

Charles, Shhh, if anyone discovers vinegar disolves plaque on teeth and rooter-rooters arteries, its price will sky rocket. In fact, the FDA will declare vinegar available by prescription only.

I use white vinegar for cleaning. It is a mild acid which is why it cleans so well. I like your idea for the dishwasher. I will pass it along to my wife who loooooves everything hospital clean.

James, I love the smell of bleach so I can relate to your wife's love for clean. The last few years I began using vinegar. Now the smell of vinegar also signals "clean" to my brain.

Squeaky clean. Dishes and dishwasher.

And then I was over at one daughter's house for dinner last night and she was complaining of spots on her silverware.... Now she's getting some vinegar. :)

Kate, are you saying you left the glasses upright filled with vinegar?  How'd the vinegar get out of the glasses?  Perhaps I missed something....

Barbara, fill three glasses with white vinegar, place them upright on the top shelf of an empty dishwasher. Run a full cycle without soap on the hottest setting.

Glassware clear as a bell now with no water spots. Mineral build-up on the heating element gone. The arms spin and water shoots out the sprayers like a geyser.

I think the trick is to repeat once a month in hard water areas like Nevada.

Cheap fix - no harsh cleansers. :)

Kate - I am so doing this tonight to my dishwasher.  My favorite use for vinegar is on newspapers for cleaning mirrors.  I also love your use of the word "blech."  Funny.

Susan, I have a sister who uses blech and argh a lot. I picked those words up from her. When you use vinegar on newspapers for cleaning mirrors, does the print come off on your hands etc?
