Flash Drive - a Great Portable Storage Device

By

Remember way back when we used to store data on floppy disks and then later, the 3.5" diskettes?  Change is constant... especially when it comes to technology!

If you have not yet been introduced to flash drives, let me do so now.  A flash drive (a.k.a. thumb drive or pen drive) is a small, portable device used to save information externally - information that perhaps you don't want stored on a hard drive.  The amount of memory they hold varies.  I've seen anything from a 16MB to a 4GB (that's right... 4 gigabytes)!  Most can be attached to a keychain or a lanyard, if you wish.

Flash drives are inserted into a USB port on the computer and can be used to store a variety of things.  They are also ideal for transferring data and images from one computer to another.  I even read about a real estate agent who keeps all his e-mail on it. The prices I've seen recently for flash drives range from about $20 to $180.  I purchased my second one (a 2GB) a couple of weeks ago for about $60 after the automatic rebate.

Do you use a flash drive?  If so, in what ways have you used it?

This is on my "wants" list. My business coach keeps everything from her business on one. She's from New Orleans and lost everything in the hurricane. The one thing she didn't lose was her business because she put the drive in her pocket when she left.

I think this would also come in handy if your laptop was ever stolen because you can keep all personal and confidential information on the thumb drive instead of your computer's hard drive.

I have an old flash drive that isn't big enough to put my business on, but i do use it to carry all the flyers for my current listings and some basic documents/contracts so that in case of emergency i can always drop into a Kinkos and do some printing no matter what part of town i'm in.

thx, k.

Leanne, I have a 1GB and use it to transfer files from lap to desktop.  It's pretty handy and surprisingly can hold a lot of data.  Now, you say they have upwards of 4GB, wow!

these are great for taking files from home offices to office offices-especially when you have lots of photos of a listing, too many and too large to email.

also, a lot of the promotional companies (i use www.leadingedgeideas.com) offer these personalized.  they make great agent gifts/closing gifts/referral gifts.

I have two.  Have had them for long enough that 1 gig was not available.  I have some files on one and graphics on the other.  The graphics of course take up a lot of space so it was not (at that time) an effective use.

I have two, one for my important stuff and the other for my cpa.  (Not that my accounting is not important!)

I like the idea of having information with me, in case my home or office were to burn down...perish the thought.  At least if I needed to I could start over with some data, it not the actual equipment.

I don't really have an office anymore except at home.  I lug my teeny flash drive around all day.  it had the flyers for my listings on it so when I get into the office I can print.  It also has all my links and passwords to everything, and a complete set of Minnesota real estate forms incase I can't get online to get my zip forms.  They are sooo cool!

Crystal:  Be sure to put this high on your "wants list"... it is a terrific investment for many reasons and the prices have come down considerably over the past year.

Christopher:  Actually, there are even some 8GB flash drives.  I found one on NewEgg.com for about $133.

Leigh:  Thanks for the link to the promotional items company.

Kristal & Christine:  That is one of the reasons I use flash drives... in case of emergencies (fire, hurricane, etc.).

I didnt know they were that versatile. I just lost my hard drive on three month old Dell laptop- wish I had this blog earlier- I could have had all the stuff i lost stored externally.

Thanks Leanne for bringing this gadget to my attention.

AR teaches me something all the time!

After learning that information on a computer hard drive is still accessible, even after it has been formatted, I have decided to start storing the borrowers' loan documents on flash drives. That way, if my computer is ever in need of repair, or I give it to someone else, there will be no sensitive information on it. Sam's Club has a sale on flash drives. They have a package of 4 512MB flash drives for $20.
