dictionary pageA preliminary audit from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, TIGA, has uncovered as much as $500 million in fraud in the First Time Buyer Tax Credit. The audit has shown fraud to be both blatant and rampant, with thousands of aliens, hundreds of children, and as many as 53 IRS agents applying for the credit. There were also individuals who did not even own homes who received the credit.

What this demonstrates is the government’s inability to administer this program. Any time there are billions of taxpayer dollars involved and dishonest, incompetent, or indolent bureaucrats doling it out, there will be massive fraud and abuse. Although there ar other good reasons, for me this is sufficient justification for allowing the tax credit to expire without an extension.

Now we know why everyone is screaming to extend the credit.  It is a bad idea anytime you decide to offer a benefit to one part of the American public and not another.

The IRS seems to go in cycles when it comes to enforcement.  When the government's revenue is down and spending is up, you have to believe that the government is going to be looking under rocks to find taxes that are owed.  They are certainly going after a lot of the overseas investments.

Charles - The good news for the IRS in some of these cases is they won't have to go far to find the fraudsters. At least 53 of them have been identified as IRS employees!

John,

I doesn't matter what the program is, there are people who will screw the system.

John,

I might be getting cynical, but really, nothing much surprises me anymore.
