How many of these words do you know?

When I was about 12 years old I developed an unusual hobby of sorts.  I would pick up a dictionary, pick out a word that I wanted to add to my vocabulary, and the next day at school, my self-imposed challenge was to find three opportunities to use the word in conversation.  By that evening, the word was one I would never forget, and I would be able to use them all the time.learning new words

Once my friends realized what I seemed to be doing, they would try to figure out what the definition of the word was from how I used it, and pretty soon we were all coming to school with new words.  I know ... it sounds like we were a bunch of nerds, and maybe we were.  We were a group of about a dozen who did earn excellent grades in school, but we also had lots of outdoor fun and played sports.

I started thinking about those days the other day when someone complimented me on my vocabulary.  Apparently I use words that I think everyone knows, but many people don't.  Now I feel a bit self-conscious, because I do not want to be perceived as one of those nasty people who deliberately use their vocabulary to intimidate others.  I think the trick is moderation, which I think I do.

Anyway, I remember some of the words that were on my list of new daily words all those years ago.  How many do you know?  And what would you think to have a 12 year old kid using them in regular conversation?

Threap

Claptrap

Quincunx

Kerf

Mélange

Saccade

There were, of course, many others, but those are ones I recall of the top of my head as being ones I came to school with.  I think I had the most fun with claptrap, both because of its meaning, and because it was just fun to say.

So how many of these words do you know?

I'll give the definitions in a comment.  How about taking any of them that you don't know and seeing how often you can work it into a conversation?  Or find a different one in your own dictionary search and start using it, and see how much fun it is to increase our vocabularies.  I'd like to learn some of yours too, so please share.

I have to admit that I am 0 for 6 on the words you listed.  Not that I might not have been able to guess their meaning, but definitely not words I am familiar with or have used in the past.

Susan -- Fun post!  The only one on the list that I am familiar with is mélange but I am going to look up the rest and find a way to work them into my daily conversations...as you suggested.  I have always admired people with extensive vocabularies.

I know two the words in your list and will look up the others.  It depends on the situation the words I choose to use.  When meeting with clients, I go out of my way to make things as understandable as possible.

Isn't "Melange" part of a phrase that might be a little racy for a 12 yr. old?  ;-)

No wonder I can't communicate well with 12-year-olds! Looks like I have some homework to do.

I did this for years with the readers digest, they had word play which is similar to what you were doing on your own.

I think "claptrap" means nonsense. However, I am totally unfamiliar with the other words.

Rick - No, that's menage you're thinking of. lol

Melange just means a mixture of different things.

Claudette - You're right, especially pretentious nonsense (like when you hear someone pontificating on something they clearly know nothing about so that what they're saying makes no sense).

Any people who play cards or roll dice have seen many a quincunx. The Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles is a quincunx too.

I used to read Webster's Dictionary and Encyclopedia Britannica as a break from reading horror novels and mysteries. I was a sick little kid. LOL

I think I just realized how unexciting my vocabulary truly is, now I have another reason for my low self esteem.

Okay - for those who haven't had time to look them up, threaping is basically nagging or scolding.  Any of you who are woodworkers might know that a kerf is a notch or slit made by a saw blade (my dad was in construction).  Saccade refers to the back and forth eye movement when you're reading or when your eyes are darting back and forth to see left to right and back quickly, like if you were watching a pingpong match.
