It is very common for people to ask if I am really making any sales in real estate and then to give me that look as if to say, "poor thing. How are you surviving?"  I suppose this is understandable when you look around and see all the for sale signs; some having been up over a year.

Yesterday, the question came up several times, starting with a visit to my financial consultant, next, running into someone in the store and then again during a telephone conversation with a friend I had not spoken to for a while. Don't get me wrong, I do send out information when I list and sell properties.

My usual response to such a question would be yes, and I am presently working with buyers and sellers.  My problem is, I hate tooting my own horn, although my husband reminds me that real estate is a sales business and a little tooting does go a long way.  I am the type of person who would not show up for an award if I knew about it ahead of time, so tooting my own horn is just something that is uncomfortable for me.  I prefer providing a a good experience for my clients.

I admire the way my friend Bill Gassett always does a blog after selling a property, so yesterday I decided I would expand on my answer to those asking if I was actually making sales.

And this is how I responded. Yes! I am selling real estate, as a matter of fact, October is not over yet and  in the last 3 weeks I sold a property on Elm Street and do you know what was great about that? I saw more properties like the one on Elm  St that were priced over $ 400,000 moving; actually a couple pending right now  were listed over $700,000.

Real Estate Sold in Red Hook NY

I sold a ranch in Gallatin on a large parcel and over the last couple months I had many calls from people interested in purchasing it, some who had look at it months before.  This too showed me that there were many people who still wanted to own real estate.

Next, I told them about my listing that I had an accepted offer on in 40 days althouugh the days on the market for the area exceeded 100 days.

I thought about it for a moment, and then I  said, those 3 transactions in October would account for over 1.2 million dollars of real estate sales.  And the reposone to that was: Wow! I guess you are selling real estate.

I failed to mention that these were all non-distressed and cash sales.

So, I just have to drill it into my head that people really like to hear your success stories.

Most people are caught up in the bad press that the housing market has gotten.  It is good to hear a positive story once in a while!

Great post!

Hi Jennifer...  people really do like to hear about real estate success stories, but they like stories that they view as real and genuine, like the way you presented them in your post.  I find that when success stories are vague or sound overblown, in a sort of self serving way, that people could care less.

Ray That is true, the real estate news reported is usually bad, although this week the news report was a bit positive about the housing start last month being better than the analysts had expected.

Thanks for stop by I love seeing new faces.

Steve I know just what you mean.  I did use the opportunity to educate the enquirers about the market.

Hi Jennifer...Your friends on Active Rain like to hear about your successes also.  I'm happy that you are listing and selling.  It is good for you and good for your area.

While this has not been my best year, is has been a good year and, yes, there is still some time to go.

Jennifer I totally understand the being modest, but your husband is right, you are selling and working hard and people should know you are the Realtor pro they are looking for.  Rock on for your success.

I agree, many people are getting caught up in the "bad economy" stuff in the news.

I am a new agent and I am getting all sorts of funny/sarcastic comments from people such as:

"Well good luck with that"

"I hope the market picks up for you"

"Do you really think you will make any money?"

"It is a bad time to get into real estate"

I am learning to have quick come backs though. In my first week as an agent my neighbor asked me "So did you sell anything yet?" My reply was "No, but I can sell yours if you want". He just laughed and walked away.

Kate - We know that business is always there, it does matter the type of market.  Yes under some market condition we have to dig deeper.  Glad to hear you are doing okay.  I sure appreciate my friends here.

Kim I know he is right, it is just hard to break old habits.

Jean glad to see you don't allow the comments to get you down, just focus on your goal.  Most of the people who ask are really concern and do want to see you succeed.

Jennifer..I have also been an Avon Representative for the past 10 yrs and have gotten many comments where people don't think it is a "real job". So in a way I am used to the odd comments.

On my first day as an agent one person told me "So how does it feel to be working again?"  Uhm... I have always been working, Having an Avon business for 10 years did not happen without "work"

Jean many times people open their mouth before thinking.  You are well seasoned to combat these comment if you sold Avon for 10 years.

Jennifer, it is not tooting your horn when you answer that question.  Tooting your horn would be to answer it before it is asked.

When people ask me how is business my answer is always "It is great", because it is, and I am only stating the facts.

George I do tell them that I am selling and listing, I just never elaborated.  Yesterday I was very specific and I could see the advantage.

I see what you are saying, answering before a question is asked is tooting.

Jennifer, I, like you, would prefer not to show up if I knew the award was being presented, LOL. But I would take it anyway! We should do more telling the positive, it is a good idea! After all the work we put into selling a place we should say, HEY, look at this, real estate is selling, and I am one of the people selling it!

So, I haven't sold as much $$ as you, but have closed on 2 homes in the past month!

Jennifer - So many people have the notion that real estate sales are non-existant.  It's very important that we get the word out that we indeed are selling and attending closings.
