I'm not sure that is an accurate statement.
But having been to a variety of farmer's markets in California, in New England, in the Mid West, and in Europe, I have to say the Farmers Market at The Grove inLos Angeles is unique.
And it is historic - the original since 1934! Not a long time, perhaps, compared to Europe or the East Coast, but definitely an LA landmark.
Located on the east side of Fairfax north of 3rd and south of the Beverly Center in Los Angeles, the Farmers Market is adjacent to The Grove, the trendy outdoor mall with a myriad of upscale shops - Abercrombie and Fitch, Banana Republic, Coach, Tommy Bahama, Nordstrom, L'Occitane, J. Crew, Anthropologie and much more - as well as in-store events, activities in the mall, and events for kids.
But this post is all about food and food shopping at the Farmers Market...
This place rocks on most weekends. Loads of folks milling around the many shops offering fruits, vegetables, meats, seafood, candy, gourmet popcorn, and just about any other foodstuff you could want, along with lots of other shops. But the best part of being here is having brunch in the open air, and selecting food from one of the many vendors, depending on your taste buds.
It's a terrific place to people watch, and very popular with the locals, so plan to get their early. There are dozens of tables, with only a few offering table service...but who cares? The food is great, the atmosphere convivial, and you are outdoors in LA enjoying good food in a casual environment on your day off from work.
With the sun shining, the LA Times, a great cup of coffee, friends to keep you company and some great eats, it's a fabulous way to pass an hour or so on Saturday or Sunday morning (but they are open every day - Monday through Friday from 9 am to 9 pm; Saturday from 9 am to 8 pm; Sunday from 10 am to 7 pm).
The French Crepe Company is a huge favorite, with a wide range of crepes, egg dishes, waffles and pancakes to choose from. But you can order from where you wish and sit wherever you want. How cool is that?
I know folks who are there virtually every weekend, a tradition you might say.
So the next time you are in the Los Angeles area, take the opportunity to stop in and enjoy the Farmers Market. By the time you are done eating The Grove shops will be open and you can make a whole day of it.
LA Style, of course.

Anyone been there before? I love this place - it's not fancy, but who cares.
