The Los Angeles Farmer's MarketI'm not sure that is an accurate statement.

But having been to a variety of farmer's markets in California, in New England, in the Mid West, and in Europe, I have to say the Farmers Market at The Grove inLos Angeles is unique.

And it is historic - the original since 1934! Not a long time, perhaps, compared to Europe or the East Coast, but definitely an LA landmark.

Located on the east side of Fairfax north of 3rd and south of the Beverly Center in Los Angeles, the Farmers Market is adjacent to The Grove, the trendy outdoor mall with a myriad of upscale shops - Abercrombie and Fitch, Banana Republic, Coach, Tommy Bahama, Nordstrom, L'Occitane, J. Crew, Anthropologie and much more - as well as in-store events, activities in the mall, and events for kids.

But this post is all about food and food shopping at the Farmers Market...

This place rocks on most weekends. Loads of folks milling around the many shops offering fruits, vegetables, meats, seafood, candy, gourmet popcorn, and just about any other foodstuff you could want, along with lots of other shops. But the best part of being here is having brunch in the open air, and selecting food from one of the many vendors, depending on your taste buds.

It's a terrific place to people watch, and very popular with the locals, so plan to get their early. There are dozens of tables, with only a few offering table service...but who cares? The food is great, the atmosphere convivial, and you are outdoors in LA enjoying good food in a casual environment on your day off from work.

With the sun shining, the LA Times, a great cup of coffee, friends to keep you company and some great eats, it's a fabulous way to pass an hour or so on Saturday or Sunday morning (but they are open every day - Monday through Friday from 9 am to 9 pm; Saturday from 9 am to 8 pm; Sunday from 10 am to 7 pm).

The French Crepe Company is a huge favorite, with a wide range of crepes, egg dishes, waffles and pancakes to choose from. But you can order from where you wish and sit wherever you want. How cool is that?

I know folks who are there virtually every weekend, a tradition you might say.

So the next time you are in the Los Angeles area, take the opportunity to stop in and enjoy the Farmers Market. By the time you are done eating The Grove shops will be open and you can make a whole day of it.

LA Style, of course.

OK, Jeff, I'm ready to visit! Your tour is a grand finale to your post. All that's missing are the smells - wonder who'll have a program to add those...

Hi Jeff,

The Grove, yes I just love this place! You're right, it's such a great place to "people watch" and every now and then you see a celebrity just hanging out. It's also a great place for eats, a little of this and a little of that. It's fun to go with a small group. Thanks for sharing.

Okay Jeff, You win..........It is a fantastic Farmers Market and like no other! I'm not sure if it's the Farmers Market which makes it so or the fact it is at The Grove.

Jeff - A bit of trivia is that the Farmer's Market was actually there first.  It's been there for about a million years or at least since I was a little girl, so I guess that'd would still be about a million years!  I love to get the Gumbo and Jambalaya at Dupar's.  They also have Beignets...almost as good as the ones in N'awlins.  The Greek food is also another of my faves.  That's it, let's gather up a mess of rainers and drive up there!

Lynda - thanks for stopping by. It has become a regular stopping spot on the weekends when we are there to visit my daughter.

Paula- LOL. Guess I like the overall atmosphere. Certainly I have found larger outdoor markets with more variety, but the LA scene is so unique with all the other shops and places to eat.

Marlene- I did a little research and was surprised it had been there since the 1930s. Lots of people know about it. A group eat could be fun! Thanks for your comments.

Kaye - thanks for coming to visit. I'm a big fan of the breakfast food (and of course for breakfast there is always The Local Yolk!).

Jeff, you had me when you said that "this post is all about food and food".  Now this is a place that I could really get into, and probably cause me to have to take some of those "Spin Classes" that your into :)

LOL George. There are some pretty neat shops but the food IS the reason for being, IMO. Thanks for your comments. I think you SHOULD try a spin class. :)

Suzanne - LOL. We all tend to be attracted to the mention of food, don't we? I know I am. I like to eat AND to write about it. Good thing I exercise regularly. :)

Jeff - Gotta say it... that is probably the only thing I miss about your area :-)  Please don't take offence... I'm just not a big city kind of person!

Aaaaw....you don't miss the weather? The beaches?

No, I do understand. I have enjoyed living in the city in the past, but enjoy the burbs. As long as access to the city is there.

Thanks for your comments, Debbie.
