Outer Banks' NC 12 Highway is Nationally Acclaimed for Scenic Beauty as reported by Catherine Kozak in The Virginian-Pilot. Of course anyone who has ever visited the Outer Banks and driven from Corolla and Duck then through Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head can tell you all about it.
Once a visitor arrives at the south of Nags Head and begins the drive into Cape Hatteras National Seashore. the real treat begins. You will understand why the Outer Banks' NC 12 Highway is Nationally Acclaimed for Scenic Beauty. The drive takes you past Bodie Island Lighthouse and on to Oregon Inlet. The real adventure begins as you drive over the bridge and on to Hatteras Island.
If you have ever visited the Outer Banks you know it doesn't take a national designation from the Federal Highway Administration to tell anyone this is one of the most diverse and breathtaking drives anywhere.
The drive continues past Pea Island Bird Sanctuary and on to little communities like Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo then on to Avon and Buxton (home of the famous Cape Hatteras Light with its spiral black and white stripes). From there the drive continues through Frisco and Hatteras. Please take the ferry ride. It's is the only way to access Ocracoke Island. And, you will be so glad you took the time.
Now each of these intriguing communities offers their own specialties, but it is simply the scenery along the way that makes the trip so worth it. Come and visit. Come and stay.
