Elephant Odyssey at the San Diego ZooNow that the new Elephant Odyssey is open, the Zoo is renovating the old exhibit areas where the elephants and some other large animals were being kept.

Giraffes at the San Diego ZooThe giraffes now have a larger exhibit area, and some rhinoceroses have moved in as well.Rhinoceroses at the San Diego Zoo

Towards the back of what was once called "Hoof Mesa" is a new Flamingo Lagoon.

The Flamingo Lagoon at the main entrance is one of the most visited areas of the Zoo because flamingos are pretty and fun to watch.

To have another Flamingo Lagoon halfway across the Zoo is nice. The new Flamingo Lagoon features eleven flamingos born earlier this year.

I had wondered where all the baby flamingos had taken off to.

Hi Jim - Just had a moment of Twilight Zone.  Right now, the TV program "Nature" is on and the whole program is about rhinos.  Then I pull up your blog and right away I see rhinos!  Spooky - but then it is close to Halloween, so I shouldn't be surprised.  It has been a few years since I went to the San Diego Zoo.  One of these days I'll go back.

Hey, Jim. I would love to see the babies in person, but this is the next best thing. Looks like you both had a great day. Thanks, Jim

Jim,

Great animals. I don't live anywhere near a zoo, and I'm an animal lover, so I really enjoy the pictures! Looks like they all get nice new places to live. Thanks for sharing.

I love the San Diego zoo.. it is so nice to know that they are continually upgrading the zoo for the animals and the humans.  I love those flamingos... Nice photos indeed.

One of these days I am going to make it to the San Diego Zoo again.  We enjoy zoos and that one was tremendous 15 years ago and it's probably even better now.

Hey, Susan - You're not too far away. Just come down for the NAR Convention in a few days!

Hey, Bob and Carolin - I never tire of going to the Zoo.

Hey, Jim and Maria - It was fun this year seeing the eggs, seeing them hatch, and watching the little ones grow up.

Hey, Robert - When you go, remember to take lots of pictures to share with your ActiveRain family.

Hey, Carra - I must admit that I neglected the Zoo for over a decade, but I'm back in the groove now.

Hey, Carl - Do I detect a bit of sarcasm in your comment? Surely you're not trying to say that home life is like a Zoo, are you? LOL

Hey, Joan - If the San Diego Zoo wants to remain the greatest Zoo in the world, it's just like our blogs - need fresh content on a regular basis.

Hey, Irene - It's far superior now than it was 15 years ago. I've been going since I was about ten, but until this year I had only been a couple of times in the last decade. This year I've been at least ten times.

Hey, Betina - Thanks for the flamingo. One can never have too many flamingos, unless they are the plastic ones, and then one is too many. LOL
