How do YOU know when Mother and Father Nature's son, Fall, arrives?
In some areas of the country, Fall brings wonderful colors in the trees.
In other areas of the country, white stuff falls from the sky and interferes with life on the ground.
In other areas of the country, tourists go home, leaving sand and sea for the home Folks.
The children go back to school.
The days get shorter and the nights get cooler.
College football arrives.
Sometimes it's a combination of things.
Since I have spent most of my life living south of Interstate 10, where the sun shines more often than not, my best method for determining when Fall has arrived is when the beautiful pansies arrive at the plant nurseries.
Pansies (Viola sp.) are also known as violets and Johnny jump ups. Since I play the violin, a flower called the Viola has to be somewhat dear to my heart -- LOL.
I love the long days filled with sunshine, so when the shorter days and longer nights get here, I need the smiling faces of the pansies to help me get through my depression. Hope some of the smiling faces in the following slide show will help you get through some days, too. It's called The Power of Flowers!

Russel, I couldn't see the slide show for some reason. It is interesting that you are posting about the shorter days as I was just complaining about that last night to my husband. Having grown up in southern CA, I am still not used to how early it starts to get dark here in WA state (though I have been here for almost 17 years). We don't even get the smiling pansies to brighten things up as they die off when the cold hits. :-(
Hi Russel - I have long loved pansies. When I was very little, I used to call them happy flowers, because they just seemed to me to have a smiling face.
You are such an inspiration.. your content and presentation is AWESOME... I am off to sign up to get the slide share show... I love your cat too.... If I haven't shared that lately.. I have a cat Bubba with similar markings! Didn't know pansies were violets.. Love to learn.. thanks for sharing!
Russell Ceil brought her pansies home from the nursery the other day and put out on the back step to plant the next day.....the deer sure enjoyed them.
Hi Russel ~ It's so interesting that Autumn is pansy-time in California and Texas. Around here it's all about chrysanthemums and asters - pansies are long gone. Love the slide show -thanks for the memories!
Hey, Wanda - I couldn't decide whether to do pansies or orchids first, so I chose the shiny, happy pansies. Orchids are coming up later this morning.
Hey, Andrew - I know someone with child experience would say something - LOL.
Hey, Jim - Glad you liked it. Say hello to Maria and Josh for me!
Hey, Tammy - Let me know if it works for you like it does for me.
Hey, Libby - I wish I knew why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't on some computers. I've never had a problem, but I'm glad you eventually saw the slides.
Hey, Marilyn - I wonder if our grandmothers knew each other!
Hey, Susan - Even the solid color pansies seem to smile.
Hey, Carra - Don't forget that they are also called Johnny jump ups. Don't know the origins of that name, though.
Hey, Carl - It's nice of Ceil to feed the deer the higher quality food! LOL
Hey, Liz - Pansies like it cool, but not cold, warm, but not hot. In those few South Texas winters that didn't freeze, my wise old grandmother sometimes had pansies growing until February.
Hey, Georgina - We are lucky to live in year-round nice places, aren't we? LOL

Russel, Thank you for the Monday morning lift! Your beautiful slide-show was just the thing I needed today!
