I love to listen to people talk...truly listen...!!!

You can learn more by listening than by talking...

And in our English languge, the art of listening is even more compounded by the nuances we place on our English words...

Take the words in this title above...phrases we hear tossed around while presuming that everyone understands and knows the true meaning of those terms...

In fact, at first glance, the terms in the title seem very related and synoptic, but on closer observation and study, there can be chasms of difference in their actual meanings...

SO...do the words mean what the speaker thinks and intends or rather do they mean what the hearer hears...

In my experience the answer, more than not, lies somewhere in between...

And so we have debates, misunderstandings, arguments, disagreements, and confusion...much of which is a result of language moreso than knowledge...

If this post sounds convoluted or distorted it is probably because you weren't listening...!!! LOL...!!!

Just some food for thought on a typical Monday morning...!!!

Take the time to listen and develop the art to perfection...all will benefit and we will all have a lot more fun...!!!

Fran:  For the most part, I believe, communication is rarely received as intended. We never really know if the receiver hears and understands what we say. Even when asking to confirm and clarify what we say ... do we truly understand ... or just hear what we want to hear!

Fran, I am having a hard time 'hearing' what you are trying to say with this post. Great observations, and very truthful.

Kathleen: I concur, and that is a shame, isn't it...!!!

Ian: Your hearing is fine, and you seem to have understood my drift...!!!

1984 in large part was all about the destruction of language . If you remember everything that could be taken in more than one way was removed from the language. Listening is important and becoming a lost art. But command of the language is being lost too. It is not just a matter of snobery in my opinion. It is about the ability to express with clarity and not be misunderstood. You have hit upon a real crusade of mine. Could you tell?? Thanks Fran

Fran,

Interesting post, I had to read it more than once to make sure I was listening.

I believe that one of the great things about true civil debate is that when both sides have perfected the art of listening it usually results in each side learning from each other. We may not always agree but we can always learn.

I think that along with the art of listening we need to get back to honoring ones word. Words do mean something. If the action following the words are different those who listened know a lie was told.  If you don't listen you don't realize you were just lied to.

I believe we have quite a bit of that going on in our world today.

I have been away for a few days and I am so glad your post was the first one I read.

Blessings on your week Fran.

Alice

Alice: You have hit upon a large problem in our society...It basically is evidence of an amoral or immoral inclination in our society...!!! We are reaping what we have sown...!!!

Oh forgot about the real post here... A husband and wife are driving in a quiet car... when he says:"You know dear, I was just thinking about how critical you are." She hearing this had 2 choices... be offended, get mad and start the fight or she could ask, "What exactly do you mean by critical?" And by choosing option 2 he would reply:"I was just thinking about all the many things you do to keep our family running smoothly and I don't know how we'd ever do it without you around... you are critical to this family." Instead of assuming something, ask a probing question. Excellent point Fran. Now go phils!

Did you say something? I wasn't listening. (LOL) Congrats on game one of the World Series, that was an awesome catch by your pitcher.

Fran-While watching the news, its hard to believe "common sense" exists any more. Do those 2 words even go together anymore? It seems the administration and politicans don't seem to be listening very well to what the public is conveying. So perhaps, the problem starts the top and just rolls down hill.
