The Senate is reportedly close to getting the 60 votes they need to not allow any debate on their health care bill. This means the any Republican opposition or the time-honored tradition of the filibuster to delay a vote or give more time for discussion will not be allowed.

The leadership in the Senate is essentially telling the American people that they are the bullies and they are not going to tolerate anyone who disagrees with their position. It hasn't always been this way in the Senate, but it is now. Just another reason to clean house (the House, too) and start over.

If the bill is so bad that it can't stand up to a little healthy debate - or even serious criticism - I don't think it's much of a bill.

America, this bill has to be defeated. It is too expensive. Forget the government option and all of the other proposals that we may disagree on. It's the cost.

Just like for Bill Clinton, when it was the economy, it's still the economy - and more specifically the cost. We can't afford it. No way.

I agree with you, it needs healthy debate in the house and Senate

Well, sounds like the same old stuff we've been hearing for years? It is truly disheartening that there can't be a normal debate on the matter? Really not good for our Country!

Even if it were affordable the government doesn't have ANY business dictating to me what, where, when, and how I'll receive healthcare!

Richard,

You have hit on one of the great secrets of government - keep 'em distracted. :)

Joe,

And that debate - if it were allowed - should point out the huge price tag that is just out of the question. :)

Chris,

While we like to think we have a representative, republic form of government, it's actually rule by very few. :)

Jon,

I agree, but we're past that point in many circles - better just to attack it on the price. We can all agree that this is ridiculously excessive. :)

Steve - debate would open the eyes of the American public before the bill was voted upon.  Washington only wants to ram it through and continue to deny how costly it will be in terms of tax dollars and benefit cuts.

Bonnie,

This bill gets more expensive by the day, but I am beginning to think that America doesn't understand the cost and just wants something from the government. :)

Steve: There are 50,000,000 Amercians without health insurance. I hope they get the public option. 51 votes and this bill passes. It is good for America.

I'm curious as to how much play the CBO report of the cost will get now that they have the actual bill from Baucus.

Scott,

I haven't heard a number that high. They used to use 47 million during the campaign but realized they were including illegal aliens and people who didn't want to be insured. The number I've been hearing now is in the 5-10,000,000 range. I just can't support anything this expensive. :)

Scott,

Please enlighten us all about this 50M figure of yours.  What citizens is it composed of?  Does it include those who are here illegally?  Does it include the folks who earn $75,000 a year, yet chose to not have coverage?  Does it include those who earn $150,000 a year, yet chose to not have coverage?

Another question for you Scott, since it appears you trust the politicians.  Why haven't they stopped the fraud they keep talking about previously?  They clearly knew about it, but now say they will stop it.  Why don't they stop it today?  Why not last year or even 6 months ago?  Where are the bills to accomplish that?  I don't see any in the House or Senate.  Fill us in.

Here is an interesting tidbit from the Senate Finance Bill:

"Section 2215 on page 39, "Temporary High Risk Pools For Individuals With Preexisting Conditions."

Basically, this is a temporary insurance effort that would be backed by the government to the tune of $5 billion, to get insurance to people who can't get currently coverage because of preexisting medical conditions.  (sounds good right?  Keep reading.)

"If the Secretary estimates for any fiscal year that the aggregate amounts available for payment of expenses of the high risk pool will be less than the amount of the expenses, the Secretary shall make such adjustments as are necessary to eliminate such deficit, including reducing benefits, increasing premiums, or establishing waiting lists," the bill states.

In other words, if cash is low, then benefits could be cut, premiums could be increased and "waiting lists" could be established.

Tell me Scott. Are you still gullible enough to trust the politicians?  If so, I'd love to do business with you!

Thanks Kevin.  If I don't get an answer, he is just another mindless follower.

Geez, that number started out at 46million. then Obama made it 30 Million.  Now Scott makes it 50 million.  When the health care plan is implemented there will still be 17 Million uninsured.

If Obama's number is right then we will take care of 13 million people by disrupting the health care system for 300 million. Somebody is not real good with math.

Hello all,

Just heard that Joe Lieberman will join a fillibuster fight against the public option. Maybe all is not lost yet. :)

Steve,  I just heard Olympia Snowe is out - won't support the bill. She will vote to block Reid's bill

Bonnie,

Thanks. Had heard something about that, too, but didn't have the details. :)

Don't get excited about Snowe.  The politicians are doing what they do best.  Tricking the American public.   Reid brought the government option in so that he can appease the lib base.  He *knows* that it can't pass the senate.  But now he can look like he did what they wanted.

Snowe is playing to her voters.

Want to bet that in the end the "trigger" option will be back in?  Of course, any one with half a brain knows that the trigger is just another step to putting politicians in charge of all of our lives.

I am personally hoping they are dumb enough to use the "nuclear option".
