Chicken and EggThings that never change? I suppose we all can come up with Death and Taxes. Fairly standard response. Then change itself in life is a constant too. Look at poor Tweety here looking for his friend. Where could he have gone?

But in building a business also remember these two tidbits:

  • It ALWAYS costs more than you think
  • It ALWAYS takes more time than you think as well

It is not that we are naive or underestimate in some poor judgment upfront, it is just that the unforeseen occurs along the way. In a nutshell LIFE HAPPENS as you are executing those grand and glorious plans of yours. So be a little more patient and set aside a few more bucks and you will get there.

I own my own business and I would agree. You are never "off the clock". It takes a lot of work, but I would say it is completely worth it. I really enjoy it.

Your observation Gary is spot on. In the spirit of "Life Happens", disappointments and set backs can and often are a natural precursor to any success. But they needen't be a defining moment. Excellent Gary and thanks for sharing.

Great nuts and bolts philosophy Gary. Your practical advise for others her on Active Rain is some of the best.

The same goes for building a house - it will always take longer, and cost more than planned.  Poor little Jimmy - he's fried!

That comment about time applies for me when I am driving to meet a potential client...it always takes longer than expected...expect it.

Sic! But true. Like closings these days. They are harder and they take longer than you would expect.

I feel if people know that its going to take longer then planned, then it shouldn't cost more. Keep these costs down, lead with revenue and like you said be patient. Drive will get things done in the short term, but you need patience for long term success. Think of waiting for a bus. If you take off and start walking you will get to a close destination fast, but if you are going a distance you need to be patient and just wait for it.

Hi Gary... you make two great points and illustrate it with one hillarious picture.  Thanks for the sage advice and the late night laugh.

So true,  working for yourself take more of your time than working for someone else.

I'm having a great time along my path, and laughing at how personally I take that fried egg.

Good reminder as we start working on our 2010 business plan. I think I'll skip eggs for breakfast today :)

Hi Gary  ...I may never eat an egg again without thinking it might be a Jimmy.....As for your blog ...patience and hard work never go unrewarded.....at least in my life.  When I first got into the business my first Broker told me the longer you are in the business the less time and work you will have to put into real estate........the economy has changed that theory.

This reminds me of the first year of home ownership. So many first time buyers think they will re-do their home in the first year but that is rarely the case. It always take more money and time than they think,

Hi Gary, it's funny my husband and I were just having this very conversation yesterday about my business and how much time, effort and patience it's taken to make it what it is today and what it will still become as I forge ahead.  Great advice and a great way to remember Rome was not built in a day - we must all dedicate ourselves yet at the same time give it some time and patience to truly reap the rewards. ~Anne Marie

It is much harder to work for yourself, but the rewards are greater...until tax time.  Seriously, if you truly love something, is it work or is it just a dedication to those pursuits you would rather be doing?  Thought-provoking as usual, my philosopher friend.

I'm glad to hear no animals were harmed.  Gary, you are SO right.....Everything takes longer and costs more.  It seems to me they always "find something they weren't counting on" :)

Just like with blogging, takes a little bit more effort than you first thought and a little more time to get results. If you stick with it, bingo! Throw in patience & consistency too.

Great post Gary and am glad PETA won't be calling you.

It is really about Cost and Time. The thing many forget is that Time Costs!

Especially great advice for a newbie! And something not to forget for the veterens too. Having been in business for myself the past 10 years, the desire to to always work on some aspect of the business..I am never off...it seems.

My dad once told me "it's not the initial cost, it's always the maintenance cost" that will cost a lot. This applies to all our business purchases and endeavors, time and maintenance.

I think I just ate Jimmy....

Gary:  Very true, always cost more and takes longer.  I've never know that to be anything but true.  Poor Jimmy !

Yep and in the end we end up like Jimmy , so enjoy the ride !!

9:45am • #27

Yes, when I started in real estate, everything seemed to cost more than I planned.  So, I started trying to find "free" and or "cheap" alternatives.  Now I focus on the effectiveness (and then try to keep costs low).
