Downright spooky in the desert at night!I looked out the sliding glass door, and these two eyes glowed at me out of the darkness.

Grab the camera.

Camera out of the case.

Flash on. ISO Sensitivity, 800.

The eyes disappeared, leaving only inky blackness.  Had it left?  Perhaps it only looked away?

Sneak the sliding door open quietly.

Step out on the ramada.

Camera on.

The eyes appeared again out of the darkness, immobile, fixed on me.

Zoom in on the subject.   Flash!

Not so spooky after all!

This mule deer doe was munching on my neighbor's rosebush.  She wasn't spooked by the flash nearly as much as I was spooked by those glowing eyes!

Holy Cow!!!  That would have freaked me out!  I had no idea their eyes did that.  Was there a light that it reflected off of?

Oh, so what did your neighbor have to say about their munched on roses?  Or where they in your yard?  >Lookin' at Ginny's comment<

Doreen,

The boulder in front of the deer is on the edge of our yard.  The neighbors have been away for the summer, and should return any day.  The eyes reflect light, and concentrate that reflection.  It's the first time I've been able to capture it with a camera, though.

What an exciting capture! I hope nobody shoots Bambi. We are having an influx of bear sightings. Have a great day Mike.

GOOD MORNING MIKE!  Right time, right place - but to capture the eyes and then the little guy - you have a such a talent for that!  And we are lucky you share it with us!  Enjoy your day! -- Gab

Gab,

It's good to see you; thanks for coming by.

Susie,

I think she'll be just fine.  It's illegal to discharge a weapon in the neighborhood.  I want to see a photo of the bear that's frequenting your neighborhood!

Wow, could you imagine being that doe and you sneaking up on her in the dark with a little box that made a big flash and then 'yikes' - I can't see nothin!  Ouch, it's that crazy Mike on his, what was that called, oh yeah, ramada.  Doesn't this guy sleep?  Munch, munch, yum.

Lyn,

The interesting part of capturing the photo is that the deer didn't bolt when I clicked the shutter.  I wonder if the flash of the camera seemed to be lightning to her?  She put her head down and kept on munching.

(The ramada is a ground level back porch under roof.  That's a support post on the right, and if you look closely in the center, you'll see the doe with her head down.)

Cool shots, Mike!  That first one of just the eyes is really eerie looking.

I was on your side of town yesterday at an Open House (to be auctioned in a few days!) and as I pulled out, a mule deer with a pretty good set of antlers crossed the road in front of me. Beautiful.

I love the "eyes only" shot!  Just in time for Halloween!  I have deer in my yard and I've seen plenty at night, but I don't think I've ever seen the glowing eyes.

BarbaraJo,

Not a little underexposed?  LOL

Sharon,

When I was a little kid, my Dad used to tell us "Spooky Stories."  Now it's my turn.  :)

Patrick,

I haven't seen you around the office much this week.  Scouting your fall hunting grounds?  LOL
