Is This the Next Trend With Real Estate Photos?

By

After playing around with Microsoft’s Surface, I couldn’t get their photo viewing application out of my head. I love the fact that you can move photos around as if they were on a table top. It got me thinking if this same concept could be delivered online. So last night I started playing around with a way to do something similar online.

The Concept is Still in Diapers

Before I give you the link, let me first give you a few disclaimers… The demo page is not the final result but only a proof of concept. Obviously, it’s not quite ready for prime time. After all, I just developed this last night and am sharing it with the Active Rain community first!

Because I just created this, I have not yet coded it to work in all browsers. So if you have Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox, then you’re in luck. For those still using Internet Explorer 6, you’ll probably just see a choppy mess.

Give It a Try

You can try out the concept on this page. I setup a few test for you to interact with. Click and drag the images around. You will notice that that page conforms to the way you want it. You can also see how the interface disappears so you can interact however you want (much the same way you would if there were a group of photos spread out on a table top.)

Zooming In On a Photo

I also gave one image the ability to zoom in and out. Just grab the photo of the empty dining room (For this demo, this is the only image with the ability to zoom). You can zoom in and out by holding the shift key down as you click and move your mouse. Granted, holding the shift key down is not “intuitive” but I just needed something quick for the purpose of this concept.

How It Works

The actual functionality is pretty simple. One important thing to note is that it uses absolutely no Flash! Instead it’s simple CSS and JavaScript.

Expanding on the Concept

How can this be expanded? A few ideas come to mind…

  • All photos could have the ability to zoom in and out.
  • The ability for visitors to organize and save “layouts” of their favorite photos.
  • The ability to dynamically pull in comparable data of multiple homes (this would allow the visitor to arrange the photo and data however they see fit.
  • Photos would contain a “tab” links to more information about that particular photo.

What Do You Think?

While I love the concept, I am still trying to think about how this can best be used to add value to the consumer? Or would simply the “wow” factor be a selling point for Home Sellers? I would love to hear your feedback. Is this concept of giving the visitor more control the future of websites? Do you see something like this going mainstream?

Update: Maureen Henry had a great idea to put the demo directly in this post using an inline frame. Great thinking. See below... Remember, If you are using Internet Explorer 6, then it will not render correctly, as of right now, this only works in IE7 and Firefox.

Very Nice brad.  My only complaint, because I'm crazy like this, is that i can't straighten the pictures up. They're slightly crooked!  LOL  Ok but could you have like 40 of them and still have it download.  Or perhaps one page for each room of the house, and detail in on it.  I like it better than a slide show for sure, because I could hold two pictures side by side and compare them and no one is telling me when they need to move forwards.  So for my own website, I would take pictures of the fridge, stove, dishwasher, sink everything that has to do with the kitchen, and that would be the "scrapbook" or collage.  Just a thought!

Lexa: That's where I think the best application is. Pretty much like scrapbook pages! But in this scrapbook, you can arange them any way you want. That's the big plus for this. It puts the site visitor back in control. You nailed it when you said "no one is telling me when they need to move forward" The main thing that a site visitor wants is to be in control.

Brad,

This is awesome! I think this would be fantastic in the bridal market - photographers! I think they would eat this up. They could use it on their website so the couples could "design" their photo album, or the couple could send announcements using it,  and many other applications....the possibilities are endless with this industry.

Brad - very clever idea. If nothing else, it could give a visitor something to play with on the site capturing their interest longer.

Here is something my web/IT guy threw together after he saw this post as his quick thought on how to use this. He thought of using it as a photo tour that has a bit more stickiness than a traditional slideshow and maybe even panorama virtual tour. He thought main rooms could have their own section with a bit of descriptive text, maybe captions on the photos could be added.

Photo Book

Neat use of technology. I'd be interested in see a practical application for this with a real estate web site. Can you keep me in the loop as this gets 'fleshed out'?

My friend showed me microsoft surface a couple weeks ago. Its going to change a lot of things once it gets going to the public. Especially a lot of loses in certain job fields that wouldn't be need anymore.

Looks fun... maybe it could be implemented as a "design your own brochure" option on a property detail page. Give users something interactive to do?

Surface is incredible!  However I'm not looking forward to having to purchase a blue tooth cameras and related devices.  Your work shown on this blog is pretty cool and I can definitely see people implementing this free form style into more media and web sites.

Pretty impressive, nice toy.  I think it could be something to bring people back to your site.  In the mystical world of 2.0, is it the clean look that seem to be popular?  I've tried something on one of my sites using SwishZone:  http://whyrealtyworld.com/Sawmill_Creek/smc_lrg_map.htm.  Not the same as stacking photos, but very usefull for Plat Maps...

I haven't heard of Surface yet, how does it compare to Adobe products?

Dawn: Thanks for checking it a Mac. I hadn't got around to seeing what it looks like in Safari.

Greg: Surface doesn't really compare to Adobe. It's hardware. Check out www.microsoft.com/surface for more

I think it would be a Wow factor for the consumer, much better than just having pictures lined up in a row.  I think it adds more punch to the flyer or webpage with the different angles of the pictures.  I will have to keep an eye on this technology.

Brad, this is a great utility.  If MS could add panoramic capability then it would be incredible!
