"Take Control of Your Health" is a six-week education workshop for adults and caregivers who want to take charge of chronic health problems, including arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and osteoporosis. Participants will receive a book, titled "Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions," and learn practical skills to live a more fulfilling life and get relief from pain, fatigue and other symptoms. Sessions will be held 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, 12 and 19, Dec. 3, 10 and 17 at the Franklin Township Senior Center. Class size is limited. Advance registration is requested by calling (908) 704-6339. This program is sponsored by the Somerset County Office on Aging and the county Retired & Senior Volunteer Program. The education workshop is an evidence-based program, developed by the Stanford Center for Research, that provides knowledge and skills to help individuals take a more active role in their health. The course is interactive and provides the tools needed to manage symptoms, work with health care professionals, set weekly goals for behavior change, problem-solve, use relaxation techniques, handle difficult emotions, eat well, and exercise safely and easily. Health benefits reported by participants, from six months to one year after completing the program, include more energy, less disability, lower health distress, less fatigue and less social isolation.
