The Cash For Clunkers Numbers Are In, And It’s Not Pretty

junk carAn article today in the Wall Street Journal reported that the per car cost of the additional sales generated by the Cash For Clunkers program was approximately $24,000 per car. Wow! Perhaps it would have been better if we just gave each of the participants a car. We could have given them an American car, which would certainly have made a difference to the American auto industry.

Why bother with setting up a cumbersome program that stimulates foreign auto sales and costs enough to give the cars away. And the argument that we removed a greater number of older, polluting vehicles from the road, while correct, is difficult to justify, considering the cost. The realities of the program are that it was an artificial, temporary, and costly stimulus that failed to create a lasting effect in the industry. And now that it appears that the First Time Buyer Tax Credit will be extended, I can’t wait to see its final cost.

Just like the $8,000 home-buyers tax credit * these buyers would have bought in a year anyway.  Their cars were practically inoperable.....these are smoke/mirrors faux stimulus EVENTS and not long-term solutions!!

Definitely a high price to pay.....and now the cost for the first time buyer program is going to make our hair curl. We are throwing dollars at problems instead of coming up with solutions. A dark road indeed!

John,

$24,000 is an incredible number.

Barbara - It's an expensive "clean up."

Terry - It doesn't happen often.

Charles - And the cars sold cost the purchasers more as dealers and manufacturers took advantage of the hype and discounted less.

Wallace - Nothing long-term in that or most other stimulus programs.

Dick & Dixie - It will be interesting and somewhat depressing once we see the results from the homebuyer tax credit.

Brian - An incredible number that cannot be justified.

John, look on the bright side of it. If the govt. paid $24,000 for each car, the program probably would have cost the taxpayers $50,000 per car.

John, The worst part is that WE can predict it but not our leaders. I'd love to be wrong about the Home Buyer Credit but...

Leslie - A distraction perhaps?

John there really doesn't seem to be a light at the end of this tunnel and the spending just seems to continue.

John this is amazing. I remember reading a statistic on the tax rebate of $600 and it cost millions more to write the checks, the checks themselves and the mailing that we gave in credit. I can't remember the exact numbers but it was something like 2 or 3 times the rebate amounts to administer and deliver the rebate. If that were a private buisness doing that they'd be out of business --- oh but wait - I forgot  -- the governement bails out business that do financially stupid things. Do I detect a pattern here?

Sue - And if there is a light, could it be an oncoming train?

Kathryn - Yes, there is a very distinct pattern, and it seems to be growing.

Thanks for the post. Many of us arrived at the same conclusion and are equally outraged. :)

Maybe 'Cash for Clunkers' was just something to keep us occupied while they were fine-tuning the 1,990 page healthcare reform bill.

John - And maybe they'll come up with a program where we can trade in our "old" houses, cash for cottages.
