An Option for Discouraging Photo Thieves

Zillions of photographs are posted to the web every day, and many of those are stolen and used by others on their blogs or websites. We've all read that even if you buy a photograph, you can't be absolutely sure the folks you bought it from had a right to sell it to you. Risky business, this copyright infringement stuff. The best way to protect yourself from a lawsuit, and a stiff payout, is to use your own photos. So, you ask, how do I protect my photographs from theft? Well, you can never be sure it won't happen to you, but you can take measures to make it a bit tougher for the unscrupulous to snag yours.

One method is signing your photographs. I posted this to my blog a while back:  How to Create a Signature Brush in Photoshop

Signing your photographs is one way to announce it belongs to you, and will discourage all but the most bold of photo thieves, who will just crop out your signature, and plop it in wherever they have a mind to. Another method is 'Watermarking' your photos. While this works better in discouraging thieves, it can also have a distracting effect on the photo. In any case, I offer this tutorial, and you can decide if it works for you.

I have used Photoshop CS3 in creating this tutorial, and assume a basic working knowledge of Photoshop. HOWEVER, if you do not have Photoshop, or something like it, do not despair! I have offered a link to a FREE online tool for watermarking your photographs at the end of this post. There are also online companies that will actually 'track' your photographs for you - and let you know who's trying to get away with something, but from what I understand, with some of these the method  used degrades the quality of the photograph.

This is easy, guys! You'll be surprised!

1. Open your photo, and select the Type Tool. Then select the font, size, and color you wish to use. If you decide you don't like the position of your text, move it. (You can do this it at any point before saving it).

Watermarking Tutorial Step 1

2. Click on the FX Tool at the bottom of your Layers Palette, and open Blending Options. Here you can choose any effects you'd like your text to have. I have chosen Bevel and Emboss, but play around - lots of fun things you can do here. Just keep in mind how 'distracting' some choices might be.

Watermarking Tutorial Step 2

3. Adjust the Opacity slider to achieve the level of opacity you want.

Watermarking Tutorial Step 3

4. You are not limited to using text - Try a symbol, such as the copyright symbol, or your logo.

Watermarking Tutorial Step 4

That's it! Done.

Now, if you don't have Photoshop, you might look into a free site like PikMarkr  I think your options are more limited than they would be if you had full control, but it might be better than not at all!

My next post will be how to create an Action in Photoshop for Watermarking your photos!

Hi Debi, I don't have photoshop either but the software that came with my Canon camera has a thing where you can edit the photos and one of the options is text. For my photos, I use my web address for the text. Photoshop looks a little fancier. Maybe one of these days I'll try it out.

Hi Debi, thanks for the info. I saved Pikmakr to my favorites. Although I have Photoshop, my skills are limited so that I often use simpler methods.

Debi, I had Photoshop 7 but it would not talk to my 64 bit computer so I have not been able to use it.  I actually could use our desktop so would this be similar with Photoshop 7.

Hi Marchel - Don't know about PS7, but guessing it would work just fine. These are pretty basic steps. Doesn't require anything fancy. Give it a try and let us know - others may have the same question.

Debi - Fascinating stuff!  I have known about watermarking and about how to accomplish it.  But one thing I had wondered has to do with the fact that I have posted my pictures, and basically told folks to feel free to use or distribute as they wish.  I'm not a professional photographer, and utilize the goodwill from gifting my marginal talents to acquire real estate activity instead.

HOWEVER, I had been concerned that others could claim ownership of my work, and at some point try to sell to others, and that has bothered me somewhat!  It may be that I will possibly watermark, but continue allowing others to use or distribute as they wish.

Myrl, you have valid points there. It's one thing to offer freely, and have folks make use of it, but quite another to have someone make use and not give credit, or worse yet, as you say, claim it as their own. A faint watermark in an 'uncroppable' area, might do the trick. At least take away any worries.

Debi, I have been considering a watermark or signature on my photos, so this post and your post on signatures really look interesting.  I have Photoshop Elements 7.0, so I bet this information will be close to what I need.  Thanks for sharing.

Hi Deb, Congratulations on a great tutorial post. Another easy way to us the © symbol is with Picnik. It is really fast and most can do it.

It is not as likely to stop pilfering but many think seriously befroe taking it. and then layering the name off or just cropping it off. The attempt is better than nothing and at least if there was a dispute the real owner  have the source of when where and on what camera it was taken.

Most camera downloads programs have that included.  But I sure do like the water mark idea. In the photo you used in your example, couldn't that watermark be used so light that it would hardly be noticable? Half tone of a half tone?

Debi, shame on me, I don't own Photoshop. I have been thinking about it, but with many other things I need it gets put on the back burner. I have been looking for a way to watermark, and will go check out the free site. Thank you!

Picnik, like William said above, is an excellent and FREE resource. I've been using it for years and love how simple they've made it to use.

Hi Debi, fist of all love the dog & snow flakes falling in the photo example. I may have to break down and get this software program, it looks like I might be able to erase some boo-boos from my photos :)

Great tutorial on how to watermark your photos, thanks.

Watermarking the photos is a great idea.  If you use the AgencyLogic powersites, they automatically do that for you when you upload your photos. Thanks for sharing the free site.

Hi Gary, I'm glad you think this will be useful for you! Let us know how it works out with 7, OK?

Morning William, Yes, the idea is to have it light enough to do the job, and have as little distraction as possible. I just wanted to be sure everyone could see it in the tutorial! LOL

Hi Andrea - Others have offered some more options here for you to check out, as well. The good news is, there is almost anything you need somewhere on the web for free in one shape or another!

Hello Kathy - It's got to be good - so many people are using it!

Cynthia- Thanks! She's my sheltie, Kasey. If you do invest in Photoshop, you will find there is virtually NOTHING you can't do, once you figure out how! Thankfully, zillions of people post tutorials on the web that help us thru the steep learning curve.

Morning Paul! Struggled with what, Paul? To mark or not to mark? Or to post without words? LOL So glad you are joining - I love seeing your photos!

Tamara- I'll have to have a look at AgencyLogic - I don't know anything about it! Appreciate you sharing it here!

Thanks for the support of all our new Members!!!!!

Thanks Debi - that's great info.  I've done a little bit with the text tool in CS3, but didn't know how to really spice it up - cool!

Debi,

I don't have Photoshop but your tutorial is tempting me to purchase it as I am sure there are many more benefits to using it.  I currently use Picasa to add my signature to my photos but like you said it any thief (especially the most bold of thieves) can copy them and crop to get rid of my signature.    I love the photo you used for this tutorial.

Hi Sharon - You're welcome!  :)

Hey Craig! No bigger PS fan than you! No doubt you'll come up with more 'creative' uses for this! LOL

Hi Mike, Awesome! Glad you'll find it useful!

Gerry -Oh, yes! Many many more uses - Once you dig in, you'll wonder how you lived without it! LOL Thanks, Kasey is my best model!

Hi, Debi:

I need a refresher on Actions, so I'm anticipating your next post. Every time I create one, I have to start from scratch and figure out how to do it all over again, so your tutorial will save me some time!

Cheers,

Robin

Debi - This is a terrific tutorial... I use Paint Shop but the photoshop programs are all about the same.. I have been using these techniques on my more recent shots as many of my shots are turning up on other peoples pages w/o my permissions. I'm sure you know how that feels.... So now I clearly mark them up. I hope that they are not too messy looking.  I'm marking them with my website address.... That'll get em...

LOL Robert! Sure will! I went over and took a look :) One thing you might do, is reduce the opacity a bit. Will still work, just reduces the distraction a little.
