Progress brings with it many great advancements, especially in the area of technology.  I remember in my first job after college that it was a HUGE deal when my department got its first fax machine and a real PC that was not a mainframe terminal.

Somehow, though, progress does not always mean advancement.  One example is the originality of design that seems to have been lost as we found more standardized signage and mass production of design.  I see old neon signs for businesses of yesteryear and am thankful that they have been preserved to tell a historical story.

I am just old enough to remember when this sort of signage was commonplace.  There were no cellular phones, Blackberry's, iPhones, GPS devices, cars didn't have airbags.  Less advanced, but definitely with more style and personality!

Service offered more style too... Do you remember when you called a company and a live person answered.  You didn't "key-in" your account information because the phone had no keys.   Service may have taken longer without all the technology, but I don't think people minded as much because it was personal.

It's hard to find companies who still hold the value of that kind of service close to their core business philosophy.  And the best ones find a way to utilize technology in a way that enhances their service, not replaces it.

It's late so I won't get started on bad service.  How many movies and tv shows have we seen with neon signs flashing in the background through windows?

O.K. just one service complaint.  You phone your cable or phone company and the automated voice tells you to enter your 10 digit number.  Then you wait and when you finally get a live voice the first thing they say is what is your phone number.  Hello???  Don't you know??? Why did I just have to enter it then???

OK. done.  Goodnight.

That's funny Steve. Some of these building are still around Houston. What about the drive in theaters?

Steve, great photo, those were the days, to actually not have to press 0 or hold on the line to talk to a person!

Steve, I remember it well.  It was the age of innocence.  Have you ever seen a movie called, "My Favorite Year?"

Great photo.

I love the Detroit metro area because there are a lot of pockets where there are businesses with orginal signs from the 50s and 60s.

Steve, I do remember these signs and didn't even realize they were another thing that are now missing until I saw your photo!  I happened to like them (but it may be because I liked the "things" of yester-year) but I do remember these old time signs and can't think of any left.

Steve, I remember those signs and the live people at the end on the phone.  Our GPS finder was my little sister when we would drive down to Florida during Christmas Break (Dad was an appraiser).  Problem was, my little sister was reading from the back window in the car on the hotels going the opposite direction!  Frustrated my Dad so much!  Those were some fun times.

Steve:

That is a classic sign.  One of the landmarks of the Boston skyline is still a very old "Citco" service station sign.

Kevin:

"My Favorite Year" was a terrific film for recapturing the innocence of an earlier time when there was "live TV", staring Peter O'Toole as an aging film star who couldn't understand the fact that there would be no retakes of his performances.

Getting an actual person on the phone rather than "Press 1 for English" yes, those were different times...

I recently turned my clocks forward 5 minutes to fool my 13 year old into leaving the house earlier. I decided to recalibrate them and wondered aloud if POP-CORN still worked. He looked at me like I was from Mars. Oh those were the days.

At the tone, the time will be Seven Fourteen, and Twenty Seconds .... BEEP!

Hey, Steve. You have to admit that we all get a great warm and fuzzy when we see places like this. Thanks, Jim

Steve,

I see these signs now and then - reminds me most of movie theaters and cars sales. :)

Steve -  I think with call prompts these days service takes longer and is much more annoying.  How about when we have to talk into the phone for a voice activated response. How silly is that?  Especially when you are in a public place.

Steve - That photo reminds me of my childhood in the 1950s.  I can imagine dinner at a place like that, and then walking up the street a bit, and taking in a movie at the neighborhood theater.
