Energy efficiency is beneficial for you as cost and comfort.  Owning your home is about you and your family; your needs and preferences.  You want to enjoy your home and get the most bang for your buck in doing so.  Energy efficient items will help you save in cost, you'll feel the comfort and when you get ready to sell the buyer that purchases your home can appreciate these upgrades.

Whether you've owned your home for awhile or are considering purchasing a home there are readily available items for you to review or inspect and then some not so noticeable items like properly installed insulation that will take some learning and further investigation.

BENEFITS OF PROPERLY INSTALLED INSULATION

Enhanced Comfort.

Properly installed insulation minimizes temperature variability indoors and helps keep rooms warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

Lower Utility Bills.

As much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. By preventing heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer, a properly installed insulation barrier reduces utility bills year round.

Improved Durability.

When insulation is properly installed, the potential for condensation that can lead to decay of building materials is reduced, helping to improve the durability of your home.

Better Resale Position.

The improved comfort, lower utility bills, and improved durability of a properly installed insulation barrier can translate into higher resale value compared to less efficient homes.

Brandi,

Is there any way for me to check if the insulation is properl installed or do I need a home inspector?

Some utility companiies will do this for you, free of charge. they will check other areas where your home may be wasting energy also.

Paul,

As Nancy noted above the utility companies can be a good resource and even if they don't perform the audit they should be able to refer you to someone local who does.  As you stated, home inspectors can be helpful as well as some appraisers who have certification and experience with energy audits.  Also you can use http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=home_improvement.hm_improvement_audits for some do-it-yourself tips and the energy star for homes partner locator.

Thanks,

Brandi, There are new, pretty sophisticated tests that can be done to audit how energy efficient your home is. It's not just about insulation which focuses more on preventing the loss of heated/cooled air. An energy tight home is well sealed to prevent air from outside leaking into the home, or between spaces inside the home like basement to living space.

A local company I work with, Affordable Weatherization Solutions, performs both the door blower test and infrared themography to identify all sources of ari leaks.
