When these property owners contacted my company, and I saw this kitchen, my first response was...."what's with this lighting?"  The owners response was, "every unit in the building is like this and they have been like this for 30 years."  In the past, renting this unit was easy but this time it had been sitting on the rental market for 4 months.  Change was in order.  They hired Dream Interior Redesign and Staging to update, stage and make it right for today's rental market.

It took us three days to remove that plastic and aluminum fluorescent contraption, rewire, paint, install new lighting, add cabinet hardware and crown molding on the cabinets.  For three days work and approximately $150 in supplies, don't you agree that it's a BIG improvement.  We couldn't find one updated fluorescent fixture (code in So. Cal kitchens) that would put out as much light as the three we removed, but additional under cabinet lighting will be added soon.

The kitchen actually looks bigger!  What an improvement!  If all the other units are not updated, this gives this unit a real advantage!  Great job!

Sharon, I agree.  It felt like that plastic lighting box was crushing me into the floor.  I'm just happy that it wasn't a drywall dropped ceiling like so many 70's kitchens.  Thank you for the compliments and comments.  These owners now have the challenge of updating ALL of their units since they own the building.

Darrell, thank you so much.  Most updating projects aren't nearly as expensive as people expect, especially if they're will to do some sweating.

Ginger ~ that's a very cost-effective improvement!  Is this the same unit you staged for lease?

The change gave the kitchen more height and it made it look much bigger! Nice work!

This is an incredible example of just how significant a change like this can have. Gone is that dated look. This is sure to make a difference, Ginger.

Congratulations. Your home staging is being featured in the group Staging Before & After Pictures.

Ginger, looks much better. Did you think about painting the cabinets so wood grains will not show up ? They look little dated, and paint does not cost much.

Lina, isn't it amazing was a few inches of additional height can do to a space.  Thanks for your kind comments.

Kathy, thank you so much for the feature and the very supportive comments.  I don't know that it's worthy of a feature but I do appreciate it!  This redesign will be a feature in my next newsletter about low cost improvements.

Anna, of course we considered all options for updating.  Painting and new doors will probably happen sometime in the future but not now.

Donna, this builder put up many similar buildings in this area back in the 70's and 80's and he used this lighting in all of them.  Can't say that I've seen this anywhere else.  Odd is right, but at least it was easy to remove. Thanks for taking the time to comment and compliment!

That looks so much better and updated, and will most definitely set the unit apart from the others.

Hi Ginger,

That florescent boxed in lighting is the pits. It reminds me of every apartment built in the 70s. It was worth every penny you spent to remedy it.

Cindy I sure hope so.  I haven't been in to a lot of apartments lately but was happy to help with this one.  Thank you.

Susan, what were they thinking?  I know that fluorescents were/are required in the kitchen but this is way overdone!  Thank you for commenting.

Sooooo much better.  That is the biggest florescent light box I've ever seen.  Great move taking it away.

Terrylynn and Chrissie, thanks for stopping and commenting.  I'd never seen anything quite so "unique" and everyone is glad that it's GONE!
