Downsizing - When Is It The Right Time?

Several things have happened to me over the past few weeks that make me question when people should make the decision to downsize.  For years we asked my mother-in-law to move in with us because of her failing health, but she refused.  Her independence meant so much to her, although no close relative lived within a days trip of her home in Pennsylvania.  After repeated offers, it finally came down to an intervention by my husband, his brother and her doctor.

We moved her in with us in the community of Big Canoe in Georgia and 3 weeks to the day she was called home to heaven.  The week prior to us taking her out of a rehabilitation center where she was receiving treatment for a stroke she had suffered, my husband and his brother had the task of cleaning out her home and selling it.  Unfortunately, my mother-in-law was a horder big time.  They took over one ton of "things" from her home to the dump.  Being a smoker for over 60 years, everything smelled of smoke and could not be salvaged.

Many people make no plans to downsize their life, their home before it is too late.  Children are left to the task of cleaning out and selling property.  When that happens, do we in the real estate profession try to guide them through the process?  Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.
