Got VOICE? Does your Blog SAY something worth talking about?

By
Real Estate Agent with Better Properties Seattle

To start the ball rolling, I wrote a "BlogVoice" post yesterday.  A BlogVoice post will garner more and deeper information on the topic at hand, in the comments.  You don't have to include everything there is to say about the topic in the article itself.  In fact, if you cover everything, you leave no space for the story to unfold more and more in the comments.

That is one of the main differences between "Stream of Consciousness" blogging (which is primarily my style and forte) and writing posts that take four days.  Sometimes you just want to say something you want to say, in the moment, as the thought strikes you.  Let how you REALLY feel come out in the comments.  Sometimes the commenters change your mind!  Watching it happen is like watching Reality TV, and we all know how popular that is.

Don't forget the LOG of BLOG...the story unfolds...and here are some GREAT "BlogVOICE" posts from AR.

I have to start with Broker Bryant, because that man's Got VOICE (kinda like "Got Game")  I don't agree with his thrust and aim from a consumer perspective and from a business perspective.  But if you want to compete with BB (BlogBoy) for the one of the top spots in "most subscribed to blog in AR, then he's the guy you want to mirror and emulate.

BB has SO many excellent BlogVOICE posts, it's hard to choose one from the many.  So here's his latest, after you skip past him playing with his new toy :). The Title sucks, but boy is it a great post!  It has everything all rolled into one.  You really feel like he's talking to you, you personally.  That's BlogVoice at it's best!

Here's an excellent example of how a blogvoice post will then garner comments that expound on the discussion and set the conversation moving forward beyond the post material:

BB,

So let me see if I understand this correctly....You sent me an offer that said the buyer would be putting 5% down and wanted $3,000 in closing costs. Sounds like something I could live with, if the buyer is willing to pay just a little bit more for the house. (Not going to give it away!). So we present a counter offer and find out that the buyer wants to do 100% financing, so now how am I to respond? I know that market is really tight, but geez, can't they just present an offer, we send a counter offer, then we agree....deal done. Why would someone put their buyer through this and let's not even talk about what this does to the sellers! Guess I will have to do like you do....Move Forward....the power of positive thinking is a wonderful thing...it has gotten me through the last 9 months! Ok.....I am putting on my kick butt boots and MOVING FORWARD!

Caligal

Then BB back to Caligal:

Hey CaliGal, It sucks! I will be confirming the buyer's credit abilities tomorrow morning. If he's as strong as the MB says he is we'll see what we can do. I learned a long time ago "We can't hold the buyer responsible for his REALTORS(R) incompetency". It's hard BUT if he does indeed qualify and we can get him where we need him we need to see if we can put it together. Hang in there!! It really felt like a let down though. I just wish folks would be honest up front. The sad thing is after speaking with the REALTOR(R) I truly believe he just doesn't know any better. They sure make my job difficult. Set the boots aside for a little bit. When the time comes I'll use mine. They're much bigger:)

Now it doesn't do me any good to write an anonymous post if you stop by. I like it though. I actually think it's a good training session for newer REALTORS(R) to see how we communicate with one another and for them to see how strong our relationship is. We are open and straight forward. That's the way it should be. No surprises and no secrets. Thanks CaliGal.

A good BlogVOICE post will turn into comments that volley and barely touch the ground.  So managing comments (topic of another post) is key if you are writing in BlogVoice, Stream of Consciousness style.

I'm going to skip Turner and go straight to Brian Brady, as Turner is more about his topics being of interest than his "VOICE" per se.  Turner has style, grace and social skills more than "voice".  You usually have to get Turner ticked off for his voice to come out :)

On the other hand, Brady likes to be ticked off and often puts himself in that mode, much like me and BB :)  Voice often shines its brightest when the poster is ticked off about the injustive of something affecting someone else...as opposed to a RANT which is when the poster is ticked off about something that happened to them personally.

As expected, Brian Brady does not disappoint.  I go looking for a BlogVoice post on his blog and front and center, numero uno post is VOICE!!!  God he's got a HUGE voice and it's aim is almost always right on target.  Unfortunately he gets too many backslappers in his comments which is a turnoff.  Maybe he needs to leave the topic a little open-ended to promote discussion or ask at the end "Do YOU think your lender has to be close enough to grab by the neck?".  My answer Brady is a big fat YES!!! I DO!  But not if my client is the cream of the crop with regard to borrower credentials.  On the fence kind of borrower?  I want a neck to grab.  See?...VOICE, makes you want to talk back to him.  Volley.

There are many voices around here I can't stand, just as they can't stand mine.  One thing about having VOICE is that you become a love 'em or hate 'em type.  I'm OK with that, but some people want everyone to like them, and voice isn't going to please all of the people all of the time.  Choose pleasing future clients, NOT other agents!!! unless you just want to be popular in AR.  And that IS what some people want to be...so go for it.  Personally, I talk to future clients and don't give a RA if other agents like me or not...but that's me.

OK, before I end this I have to find a woman in AR who's got VOICE besides me.  Hmmm.  Laurie Manny has voice, but you have to talk to her on the phone to hear it.  TLW's got voice, but it's not a business example, so not a good link for instruction purposes.  Teresa Boardman's got voice, but you have to go into a closet and let her whisper in your ear to get anything out of it.  Tisza's got voice, but she's all over the place and revealing things she shouldn't, like how green behind the ears and how brand spanking new she is in her business.

Maggie Dokic has got VOICE.  Let's see if I can find a post where she aims it correctly.  Nope!  All of her good voice posts are "Members Only" and "insider rants".  Karen George has "Got Game".  Laurie Manny's "Got Game.  Game is GOOD, just not the subject of this post.  Neal Bloom's got plenty of voice, but I'm looking for a woman here.

This is going to surprise you, as it surprised me, but you know who I would put at the top of the list of Women Who Have VOICE?  It's Loreena YEO, which is kind of odd because I'm very Jesus knocking down the tables in the Temple when it comes to people using religion as a calling card.  That whole cross thing as Justin's photo bugs me to no end.

But Loreena's use of her religious beliefs in her blog and in her business is just who Loreena IS, and her VOICE is crystal clear and of great value to her blog and to her clients.  So, SURPRISE, BEST FEMALE BLOGVOICE is Loreena Yeo.  Loreena Yeo proves you don't have to carry a big stick to have an effective BlogVoice.  Like Maggie, Loreena hides her voice behind the "members only" curtain way too often, but she shouldn't (and Maggie should) as Loreena's posts would absolutely bring her more clients, even when those posts are talking to agents.  I'd hire her in a split second; hands down.

I think I have something to learn from Loreena today.  See, when you write a blog post in Stream of Consciousness style, sometimes the person who learns the most from the experience, is the writer.  Thanks Loreena!

ARDELL, Most of my customers read my blog and I get consumer contacts from AR just about daily. They actually like seeing how I interact with my peers. It gives them confidence in my abilities. But would I write differently if there were NO agents reading? I'm sure I would. But it would probably be more difficult for me. I joined AR to share what I know. I have business and always have. Blogging was never a business getting endeavor for me. It still isn't. Now having said that, I get lots of business from blogging and it has been a nice topping to the cake.

BUT I feel I get business from blogging because I'm not blogging to get business. Does that make sense?

Ardell- managing comments is NOT like dealing face to face with the public.  Not yet, for bloggers that are relatively new.  Unlike yourself, I don't CARE if I'm talking to a logo if the person behind the logo wrote something appalling or brilliant, and I don't look at the picures before the post.  Likely why it hasn't bothered me to be a "logo".  Back to point 1, dealing with the public includes voice inflections, a read of the emotional level, and an odd tendency to really like the person, despite stupid ideas, flaws, or brilliance.  It's equally about exchanging ideas, but seeing the eyes (and their movement) behind the idea. My builder (two left) has a conflict of interest if I put my photo on Options right now.  Think about THAT- being a Realtor and having access to people buying without agents all day.  I understand their conflict, and am 100% fine with it.  Until then, I can be viewed in my Tcht, Tcht post.  No link.  And NO, I'm not the 4 legged one.  I work at both companies, I advertise myself for the builder. This is sounding way too defensive and long.  I'm going to Kansas

OK, ARDELL ... they choose me because I'm honest and enthusiastic.  I love our area and get a thrill from helping people reach their goals.  I love showing off the very best sides of a house.  When I list a house, the owners will usually LOVE the way I present it.  I hear very often that they didn't know their house looked so good!  I can fall in love with their house and make you love it, too.  I know our market and I can tell what a house will sell for ... even if I my client and my partner have already agreed to "test the market".  (I do need to work on getting my partner to quit "testing", but as he's also Dad that's kind of hard, another issue.)  I make a friend and I help them with their real estate.  My goal is not the paycheck, it's getting them what they need.  The paycheck is my bonus.

Thanks for that.  I needed to ask myself that same question.

Makes a LOT of sense...but then you always do make sense.  Always.

LOL Laurie!  Don't be defensive.

When I was interviewed back in January and asked what my favorite "blogs" were, my answer was I don't like blogs at all.  I like people.  I like Rudy and Joe.  I like Geno Petro.  I like the people who own the blogs, not the blogs.  Hence my reaction.  I want to see the person I'm supposed to "like" MOST times.  Even if the picture isn't the person.  I like to visualize a person.

Derek Burress has a photo in his banner of a guy sitting on the floor, no face.  no head.  I'm not sure if that IS Derek.  But I envision it is.  Same difference.

Hi ARDELL,

Thank you for the compliment and for the critique.  To even be thought of as a possible candidate for your demonstration is an honor.

I think that what I really need to concentrate on is not just my voice, because I, like you, could no more hide that than I could fly unaided, but rather what I say.  You are quite right about my willingness to share perhaps more than I should in my business life.  As I spend more time in the blogosphere I feel more confident and I also realize that I know much more than even I think I do.

Thank you also for your willingness to share what you think, what you see and what you know.  My goal is to become in my area, what you have become in yours, a trusted local expert with a wealth of knowledge to share, and an effective voice, both here on the internet and "out there" in real life, that continue to convey who I am, what I stand for and how I do business.

Take care, help lots of people and have a wonderful day!

Good answer, Sarah!  And yes, you are correct.  Only you need to know that and write articles that, in a collection, say that.  Not one article about it, but the bulk of articles should convey it without your needing to say it.

Tisza,

I would love to see you log the day you see a house differently as an agent, than you did the day before as a consumer.  I'd like to see that 100 times.  The miracle of our business, and I wait for that day with every new agent I train, is the day they stop seeing a house froma personal perspective and start seeing it from a professional perspective.

It's like watching a light bulb go on and often they do not notice it themselves.  I take agents to Open Houses and they come out and say "I like this one.  I liked the floors.  I liked, I liked, I liked as if they are buying a house.  One day they say "I think this one will sell before the second one we saw but not at this price".  That's the day they become an agent. Not the day they get their license.

That unfolding on a blog would be priceless...and you are that blogger.

Hi Again ARDELL,

Great suggestion and great idea, and that would be a way to combine who I am with what I am and where I am.

Thanks for the suggestion, and for the support.  I appreciate both deeply, but I appreciate your friendship and willingness to share much, much more!

Take care,

Tisza

Thanks, Ardell.  Between you and Lenn- a real toughie.  One provides insight into acceptable behavior; the other provides insight into everything common sense-both the kind with the jolt.  Sounds like the right combination- thanks for your 50%.

You know you pose a good question... I know I have a voice... and some would say a big mouth with lots of opinions...   but I am not sure which direction I am in when it comes to blogging.... from the tech to the rants... to the inspiration.... I suppose it is an accurate representation of ME... adult A.D.D. at its finest... I am in 20 directions at all times.....   thanks for sharing

"You usually have to get Turner ticked off for his voice to come out :)"

I love that. Not sure I agree, but I know what you mean. If you talked to 20 people who know me personally I know they'd all say this, "Jeff doesn't get mad very often, but when he does... wow." My wife can tell you she's only seen me really angry a handful of times. Most things just slide off my back. It's how I'm built. It's who I am.

OK... now piss me off so I can find my voice. :)

Turner,

Often consumers won't trust an agent until they can see the voice that isn't all backslappy and cheerleader-like.  So Voice on a blog has to include several mood swings.  Seeing all the backslapping is a turnoff to consumers.  Agents all woohooing each other and backslapping each other is AR's worst feature.  I think taking away the comment points might be needed to resolve this problem for AR generally.

You attract a lot of backslappers :)  I was actually on a Seattle Bubble voting thing as being Seattle's top "Cheerleader" meaning always good news never bad.  What a joke? I didn't win the vote though.  But even being ON the list was wild.  If I look like a cheerleader, what do you think all the backslapping comments does?

It's a real problem with having an AR blog, and one we should all try to resolve for the benefit of all.  Not sure how to do that though.  I figured I'd work it out on my AR "blog" when the competiion is over and I can write on my blog.  None of my readers in the blogosphere want to read about Project Blogger.  So have to get past that before addressing Active Rain as a viable source for one of my blogs.   In the meantime I've been "passing the time" gaming for points :)

Ardell... I understood your point and unsterdand what you're saying as well. I just don't think "not backslappy" has to mean "angry."

And, it the points that are really the problem. They are both brilliant, in that they get people to be involved, and a curse, in that they encourage posting and commenting that doesn't add much value. Also, you have to comment to be notified of a post comment stream. That needs to be changed. There are times that I have NOTHING of value to add to a conversation, but I want to listen and learn. Right now, I have to make some comment in order to be notified.

Turner,

I just had a nice chat with Caleb and emailed Matt and Jonathan.  I have a plan :)

Angry at the injustices that still affect buyer consumers in this Country is my passion and my blogging forte.  So it is hard for me to blog in Active Rain.  Caleb and I came up with a way around that.  The AR guys are very helpful in that regard.

Ardell, just to have been in the running was nice enough.  I'm flattered by your comments.  Thank you. Now, got any advice for me?  I realize you're busy with the hunk, but a few minutes maybe?  By the way, Active Rain has really become a sort of therapy for me and I use it to speak to my peers much more than I do to my customers.  While this isn't wrong, I realize I should be utilizing more of the power of the Rain to speak to my customer, but I really do love the socializing in this place.
