You use your lower back when you...

____ raise your hand to use the remote to change the channel.

____ turn to look over your shoulder.

____ sneeze. (small sneeze, big sneeze... doesn't matter)

____ get in and out of the car.

____ wipe your behind. (that's right.. I said it)

____ laugh. (titter, or belly laugh... doesn't matter)

____ walk up stairs. (one or two, or 3rd floor walk-up, d.m.)

____ walk down stairs. (more stairs?)

____ walk at all. (oh, yeah!)

____ reach across a table. (can you hand me that?)

____ hand a client a pen. (here!)

____ hiccough. (hic,    hic,    hic,)

____ yawn.

____ all of the above, and then some more I haven't thought of.

You tend to notice that you use your lower back, more, when you have lower back pain.  There's nothing like a back spasm, to point it out, each and every time you move. Then you notice each and every occurance of using that lower back.  Hiccoughs suck.

(ouch).

Lower back pain is the worst. There's absolutely no way to get comfortable and your right, you don't realize how your lower back is involved in the smallest movements until you hurt it.

Hi Alan!  I threw my lower back out last year.  I tried to stretch out the pain doing a yoga stretch and my back went into spasms.  I literally couldn't move and I stayed on the floor and cried.  My husband had to pick me up.  I have never, not even during childbirth, felt so helpless.  I literally could not move.  And then I realized during the weeks that followed that you are right.  You can't even lift your left eyebrow without hurting your lower back.

The most excruciating pain I ever had was when I put my back out last year lifting my then 3yr old son in an awkward way into his crib - luckily when I dropped him it was over his mattress before I collapsed on the floor !

Lower back pain = no joke

Richard - you're welcome.. you know I'm the sort that like to share.

Susan - I venture into "owieland" a few times each year.  I never bring enough luggage. I always stay there too long.  You just don't realize how every little thing you do, travels through your back.

Sheldon - consider yourself lucky.  My mother did the same thing lifting one of my twin sisters our of a playpen, and cracked a disk.  She ended up in surgery, and laid up in bed for several months while she recovered.  Her back was never the same.  Lift with the knees... lift with the knees...

Lenn - I might be willing to live on that machine, if it really got rid of my lower back pain.  I have a feeling it brings some of it's own pain.

So funny to read this today. Just a few days ago, I came down a little too hard while mountain biking and have been "enjoying" some pretty good lower back pain. And, yes, you do tend to notice how much you use your lower back...when it's ailing!

Alan, poor baby, I hope your back gets back to normal is a real hurry! I have had the lower back problems for years and they are awful. I take Flexeril and Diclofenac for the pain and it works pretty well!!!

Alan.  That machine is simply one of which I have a good photo.  That one stretches the back and then works on the arm and shoulder muscles.

However, I do work with mechines that work on the lower back and with weights.  It works for me.  No back pain.  No pain anywhere.

I believe that I have succeeded in reversing the aging process.

Craig - these bodies were built to take a beating... but they do like to notify us, when we're not taking good care of them.

Caren - I haven't taken medication for my back in years... I used to take muscle relaxants... but they made me to loopy...  now I have exercises I'm supposed to do.

Lenn - my philosophy is "no pain, no pain!"
