My owner is a Realtor with Century 21 Award in San Diego. One of the most unique plant nurseries in all of San Diego County is Weidners Garden at 695 Normandy Road in Encinitas.

Weidners Garden is not your ordinary run-of-the-mill garden nursery.

They are not always open, closing at specific times of the year to replenish their stock, and when they re-open, it's always fun. You often get to dig your own plants directly out of the ground, they often have free food and drinks, and their educational chats with the owners are not to be missed if you have a question that no one else can answer.

Weidners Garden has the greatest selection of my four favorite flowers: fuchsias, cyclamens, begonias, and pansies.

Begonia from Weidners Garden

In the Spring each year, they have a special dig-your-own-begonias day featuring tuberous begonias:

Ah, but it's not Spring, you say. That's right! It's Fall! And in the fall, Weidners Garden has a special dig-your-own-pansies day:

It's pansy digging time at Weidners Garden!

This year, pansy digging day is Sunday, November 1. Gates open at 8:30 a.m., and the official pansy digging bell rings at 9:00 a.m.

Wear your old clothes and shoes because the pansy field is usually wet, soggy, and muddy, but a lot of fun. Take the family with you!

The best selection of pansies is the first day they open for the Fall, so get there early. They have digging tools and boxes to put your selections in, but it can never hurt to bring your own.

The first week is "Family Digs Together Week." Bring your children because each child who digs with you gets to dig one free pansy.

You can see Weidners pansy pictures by clicking here, and you can find winter coupons at their winter coupons page.

Saturday and Sunday, November 7 and 8, are free hot dog day. You've never had a hot dog until you've had a Weidners Garden hot dog!

How fun, Jim.  I've never heard of such a thing.  Maybe I can convince my husband to hop in the car and head on down on Sunday.

Jim,

I guess down there you can still dig plants. Here, we're digging snow soon.

What a great idea - nobody here in Phx does anything like this, that I'm aware of.  It would be fun!

Jim,

What a fun event! Pretty pictures, too. I love looking at flowers this time of year...I think our high today is supposed to be 36 degrees. Enjoy your flowers, and thanks for sharing them!

What a cool idea.  Terry is right though.  We won't be anymore digging until next May.  Even then it can be sketchy.

Hey, David - Thanks for stopping by.

Hey, Heather - I would have gone, but Russel and I were recovering from an 18-hour trip to Joshua Tree National Park. What a drive.

Hey, Terry - Fortunately, I haven't even seen snow in about ten years except on the television. Back in 1999 when Russel and I did so much traveling for our fifth anniversary together, we got routed through Minneapolis-St. Paul for a three-hour layover. It was supposed to be a one-hour layover. Snowstorm got in the way. The cold makes me cold, so I haven't done too much traveling when the weather is bad.

Hey, Bob and Carolin - They have to be some of the happiest flowers on Earth.

Hey, Anna - Do they allow non-cactus and non-succulents in Phoenix? LOL

Hey, Jim - Pansies are my winter pick-me-up flowers, too.

Hey, Carra - Add fifty degrees and you have our high for the day.

Hey, Jenny - But you get lots of daffodils and tulips. That makes up for it.

Sounds like a great garden center - wish I lived close enough to visit!  By the way, I think I recognize that cat...didn't he just close a big deal for someone on AR?
