Winter is coming, the nights are cooler, in fact in RI it has dropped to the 20's already and the thermostats have been turned on. The days are sunny but getting shorter and darker earlier already by 4:30, dusk is upon us.

Being a New Englander my entire life, living here in RI, our  eastern region of the United States as well as Eastern Canada is famous for the brilliance of their fall foliage, and a seasonal tourist industry has grown up around the few weeks in autumn when the leaves are at their peak.

Autumn (also known as Fall in North American English) is one of the four temperate seasons. Autumn marks the transition from summer into winter. The season during which days get shorter and cooler and the nights get longer. The deciduous trees shed their leaves, with the leaves changing to a reddish or brownish hue before falling. Such coloured leaves have come to be called "fall foliage".
In temperate zones, autumn is the season during which most crops are harvested. Before the 16th century, harvest was the term usually used to refer to the season, fall and autumn.

DID YOU KNOW?

Bright sunlight is essential for the production of the red (anthocyanin) pigment in the fall leaves.

                                                           DID YOU KNOW?

The most intense of fall color occurs in in areas such as New England, with almost a few types of trees, such as maples and birches, that all turn color
at the same time during the short fall season.

Hi Kathleen.....Fall is certainly a Sign, Summer is gone for a while, Wow 20 degree's it doesn't go there here all year, it does get near freezing some times at night, but generally above 35 or 40 in the Winter and above 50 degree's in the Fall.....be sure to turn your clocks back Sunday Morning at 1:59 AM to 1 AM..If you are up :O))

DANIEL: Thank you for visiting, we do have the cold and the severe winters. Now if I could only convince my family to move toward your area I could be closer to my grandsona in Anderson, SC and probably sell the snowblower.

FRED: Thank you for your clock reminder. Most likely I will be still awake. I so love the fall and will be sad to see the last leaves fall and the trees become barren and dormant. That means winter is upon us and those flakes will be falling.

Kathleen, it is that time of year!  It is beautiful, and the air is crisp if not downright chilly!  We have already had our first snow storm (with measurable snow).

I don't feel so cold now, Kathleen.  The 20's?  Thanks for the beautiful fall pictures.  The New England sugar maples are hard to beat for beauty!

TONY and DARCY: Snow already, Oh No! I am not anxious for the snow storms. We had so many last year. It seemed as if no sooner we removed the snow we had another blizzard and more snow to remove.. I love the fall with the foliage so brilliant in colors and only having to wear a jacket or sweater during the day when the sun is shining.

SHARON: Today the highest was 58 and expecting 40's for tonight Not too cold as yesterday. I love the New England maple trees in the autumn. My first home had a dwarf Japanese maple that was red all the time. I miss that tree.
