Sorry Kermit but actually it is easy to start the process towards green living.  A few inexpensive steps by everyone can lead to some big changes overall.  As more and more consumers become aware of the threats to the environment with rising energy prices and decreasing renewable resources they are looking at their homes as an easy place to start making small changes that can help lead to a bigger impact.

  • Installing low-flow shower heads
  • Replacing old toilets with water saving models
  • Using composite lumber products to build decks, fences and roofs
  • Buying natural installation made from recycled blue jeans
  • Adding a programmable thermostat to your AC/Furnace
  • Lowering the temperature on your water heater (and when it is time to replace go tankless)
  • Composting your kitchen waste (no meat)
  • Recycling everything you can (glass, plastic, cardboard, paper)
  • Making your own cleaning supplies
  • Buying local

Some of these ideas only require that you think differently about what you throw in your trash can or down your garbage disposal.  Some are less than $100 to implement and others require you to think just a bit differently the next time you get ready of your next improvement project.  None are rocket science and anyone can do them no matter where they live.

Cindy ... Great post. Going green is very easy.  I highly recommend a book called worms eat my garbage for some easy ways to compost at home.

My daughter who lives in the UK has her worm farm.  They started with them in London and then when they bought a new home in Fareham the worms came too. They also have their rain barrels (not to tough to gather water in the UK) and the the Borough of Fareham is actually providing composting bins for home owners.

I agree it doesn't require you to become a frog!  I had been wanting to start recycling my plastics but just hadn't figured out how to go about it. I didn't grow up in a recycling family but wanted to start this habit with my two young children.  So, I simply brought up an empty bin from my basement and started doing it. I asked my son who is under four years old to help put our plastics in the recycling bin and to my surprise he explained to me how Bob the Builder (one of his favorite cartoon characters) recycles, too.  WOW!  My husband drops off the trash at the dump anyway and the recycling center is on site.  It's so easy to do, you just have to do it. Thanks for sharing!  I'll be looking for new ways to become eco-friendly and not shy away from it like I once did. Take care, Team Loni Marketing Assistant Dawn Porter

Great post.... I can't wait for more people to go GREEN.... I've been composting for years and also grow my own veggies... it is really easier than most people think.... you can even do it is small containers on your balcony where you can grow enough salad greens for year.... When I first started I was so surprised at how much I harvested... we had to give a lot of it away...

Catchy title Cindy, and great tips! There are some really simple practices that can be followed! Loni says she recycles plastic bags - forward thinking companies like TREX use post-consumer plastic bags in their decking products! Isn't that cool?
