Need a life?.....

Need a life?...

Over a year ago my sister sent me an email invitation to be her ‘friend' on Facebook.  When I got the invitation I thought, "Facebook is for kids" and deleted it.  A month later I got another invitation from someone else.  Delete! After all what could a social media site do for me?

Finally after some sisterly arm-bending I surrendered.  Signing up was an easy process...filled in some info....picked a few settings and I was on my way.  Let me tell you it's been a fun party ever since.   Where else can you go at 2:00 a.m. and ‘hang out' with your friends.  AND...ready for this?  They don't even care if you are in your pajamas!

Once signed up, my sister became my first ‘friend'.  That is Facebook slang for an on-line contact, connection, person you are linked to....you get the picture?  From there you can search for other people you know and ask them to be your ‘friend'.  So I searched for a couple of people and sure enough...there they were.  I sent them a ‘friend request' which basically asks, "Would you be my friend?"  An hour or so later I get a response, ‘Suzie Q has agreed to be your friend'.  I felt like Sally Fields accepting the Academy Awards ("You like me...you really like me!"). Over time I gained more and more ‘friends' (family members, high school friends, neighbors, etc...).  Watching them and interacting with them let me become part of their lives ...I didn't know that Karen was now a Grandmother....and look at those pictures of Sam's Hong Kong vacation.... Kevin and the gang are on their way to Washington to run in the marathon....Go Team!..... and even though my nieces live 1400 miles away I get to watch them grow up.  I can tell them, "Congratulations!" on Tuesday when they come in first place at the race or send them {{HUGS}} on Wednesday when they are having a down day.  We become part of each other's daily lives...not just a phone call now and then with the standard, "How are you?".... "Fine, how are you?".... "What's new?".... "Not much, how about you?"

There are many classes about social media...how to...don't do...when to...  I say just sign up and have fun.  Get reacquainted with people again.  Need a life?  Get a Facebook life....we are here waiting for you.

Real Estate Advice You Can TRUST!

My "social media" life is still questionable. I realize many realtors are using it to generate more business, but I am afraid I will drain time form my business to stay "connected" to people who know what I do already. Do you say, "Hi what are you doing, and do you know anyone who wants to buy a house in Orlando Florida?" I already work my shphere with a time consuming newsletter, so if I "socialize" do I drop the newsletter?

I am new at the social media life thing too. I didn't have time to spend on it, but somehow it creeped into my life and I think I might be hooked.

Dave....I had the same attitude about social media that you do...what do I need it for?   I started as a 'way' to solicit my business but it quickly turned out to be much more than that.  My recommendation is to try it out and see what it is all about...but do be careful -- using facebook just to solicit your business can become annoying to your friends...  Remember this is a 'social' media not 'business' media (humm...that might make a good blog) use your facebook page to really connect with others and use a Fan Page (kind of like a business page) to solicit your business.

Nancy...oh yes....I forgot to warn everyone...it can be additing..... :)

Dick & Dickie...you got it!  A fan page should be used for your business.... Great Job!

Thanks for the post Debbie.  I too was a reluctant Facebook participant but it's grown to be a daily excercise for me...kind of like the newspaper used to be.  Now if someone can explain to me the usefulness of Twitter, I might explore that as well.

Very cute post, Debbie! Facebook enabled me to find more people from high school and even elementary school than I even remember...plus I've gotten to network with a lot of people in the dog world. I love it, but I also love my AR time, too! :)

Thanks Debbie for your thoughts about Social Media! I am not set up on Facebook because I feel it might consume to much time. I guess it's all about taking the first step and once you do, you say to yourself "Why didn't I sign up sooner"
