HISTORY OF THE APRON...jroosevelt@kw.com, Janice Roosevelt, Keller Williams - Brandywine Valley - PA & DE

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.

The  use of Grandma's apron was to protect her dress underneath, because she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses. And they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was good  for drying children's tears, and even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.
After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to Dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

REMEMBER:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron.

It might not be a bad idea to start using aprons again..I remember my great grandmother and my grandmother wearing an apron. It always had all sorts of things on it and I used to think that it smelled..but it smelled good.

Hi, Janice. I REALLY enjoyed this post; it was like a little mental vacation from all the other stuff I've been thinking about and doing all day. So well written and it obviously struck a chord with your readers! Congratulations on the feature!

I had a feature today, too, for something I wrote just off the top of my head about what I carry in my saddlebags when I ride in Big South Fork National Park, Tennessee. http://activerain.com/blogsview/1275895/big-south-fork-tennessee-what-s-in-those-saddlebags-anyway- I was so surprised because that topic is pretty "random" too except as Localism for this area.

Hi Janice - I saw this earlier today but was so busy I didn't have a moment to ready it - BUT - I knew I had to come back and see what it was about.

Thankyou - this brings back so many memories of my Grandama Anna.  She was one of those old-fashioned Grandma's that always seemed to have an apron on.  I still have one she made for me as a little girl for Christmas!

This has been the most wonderful break all week!!!

Erin, I remember barbeque style aprons being popular a few years back, but the kind in the pattern books, are something else.

Damon, that is amazing and I guess proves the point, if you've never seen an apron

Fun Post; The only aprons that I have seen in years are made for the BBQ loving guys at their grills in the backyard.

I see aprons on Master Chefs in some of the high tone restaurants, and they are not as nearly as fancy or inspiring as the ones of our Grandmothers or mothers.

Congrat's on being a feature.

Janice, I really enjoyed your blog.  Until I moved to Southern Oregon last fall, I hadn't seen an apron in at least 40 years.  I went to many (way too many) Christmas bazaars with my wife last year, and I was so surprised to see people selling aprons!  It seems they are still widely used in Grants Pass Oregon.  Also, my wife bought a book titled "The Apron Book: Making, Wearing, and Sharing a Bit of Cloth and Comfort" by EllynAnne Geisel that she found to be nostalgic and full of quirky facts about aprons.

Gary, thanks for the tip on the book. I will have to check it out. It's been fun looking at the responses throughout the country in terms of who uses aproms, what they've become. Most do have a similar nostalgic memory similar the aprons my Grandma Bessie wore.

Janice, I love this blog!  I am one who attaches so much significance to those ordinary daily possessions.  A great magazine, if you are not familiar with it is Maryjane's Farm, for the farm girl in all of us.  This most recent issue has a wonderful section on aprons with a modern pattern on an ol' fashioned gem.  I am so glad I happened upon this beautiful piece of nostalgia.
