The Williamsburg area is bordered by three rivers, the James River to the south, the York River to the north and the Chickahominy River to the west. Each of these rivers is unique.

The Chickahominy River is very deep, it is fresh water that is only slightly brackish unless there has been a drought. It is a great river for watersports and fishing. There is a place called "The Sandbar" located about a mile and a half up the Chickahominy River from where it feeds into the James River. In the summer on a weekend it is not unusual to see 50 to 75 boats anchored at The Sandbar. People get out, walk around and visit, sharing food and stories. It is a really neat experience to be in 2 to3 feet of water and yet be hundreds of feet from the shore and knowing that the water around you is as deep as 85 feet.

The James River is relatively shallow. You won't see a lot of sailboats on the James near Williamsburg. You will see sailboats in the James River near Hampton where it is closer to the Chesapeake Bay. There is good fishing in the James River as well and the water is brackish around the shores near Williamsburg. Also in the James River you can see Jamestown Island from the same perspective as the original settlers did.

York River Yacht Haven
The York River is deep and is pretty brackish near Williamsburg and Yorktown. In this part of the York River you will see numerous sailboats and might see jelly fish also. Sometimes playfull dolphins can be spotted. A couple of years ago my grandson who was five at the time caught a sand shark that was about two feet long from our boat, REEL ESTATE!
