I got inspired by Debi Boucher's recent post on the virga clouds (Active Rain PhotoBlogger Group - Virga) and decided to share some of my recent photos of the clouds in the sky here in Big Sky country (nickname for Montana).

The first painting was photographed in the morning of October 15, 2009.  The little patches of white here and there in the clouds complement the white on the ground.  The finishing touch was the orange glow seen in the middle and bottom of this painting.

The second painting was photographed in the morning of October 24, 2009.  With the accent on the orange color, I think it was Mother's Nature way to remind us that Halloween was only one week away!

The third painting was photographed in the morning of October 26, 2009.   It looks like Mother Nature drew a laurel's wreath right above the mountain.

And the last one of this series of 4 paintings was photographed around noon on the same day as the previous painting (October 26).   I thought this was an interesting group of clouds and Mother Nature made sure that they stood out by stroking them in white and with a big brush!

Mother Nature always amazes me with her paintings of the sky here in Red Lodge as well as everywhere else int he world.   Not only she gets up early and likes to surprise us with her amazing paintings in the morning but she also creates amazing masterpieces all day and especially at night so that we can end our day on a good note (you will know what I mean by visiting my following posts: Moon Over Red Lodge - Painting by Mother Nature and Friday Foto - Red Lodge By Night).   What can I say?  She is a tireless woman and she makes our life so much better thanks not only to her beautiful paintings in the sky but also all her wonderful creations on Earth.

I hope you enjoyed this small sample of her sky paintings.  Which one was your favorite painting out of this series of 4 paintings?

Hello Gerry, thanks for sharing the awesome photos.  I always love the cloud formations that the Rockies stir up -- a never ending, living masterpiece.  John

Hi Gerry! Oh, these are amazing! I especially love the first one - because it shows the immensity of the country there. They are all wonderful 'paintings' with fabulous color presented by Mother Nature!

Gerry - There is something special about sky pictures that come from those of you in states with more open spaces than I dwell in.  You guys get all the awesome and delightful heavens to photograph.  I often get nothing but smog:-)  I didn't realize how deprived I was until I made the trip to Utah's highway 12 last month.

Hi Gerry, Mother Nature truly blesses us each day, and I love the sky paintings in your post!  If I do have to vote ( I know I don't have to - but you asked)  I would choose #4 - those bright white strokes in the bloe sky are just beautiful ---but they all are!   Our low clouds finally parted today, and we were back to blue skies and sunshine, I just love it!

Gerry, Although it's hard to choose, I would say # 4 . These are all wonderful pics, that's for sharing a taste of Montana since it will be quite a while before I get there. Mother Nature rules!!

Gerry - My favourites are the sunrise and the last painting which looks like activity surround a volcano

Hi Gerry, I cannot choose a favorite with all great photos you took but I will say the last photo is very cool looking. You described it perfectly, it does look like Mother Nature was painting the clouds in the sky that day!

Gerry,

I don't always stop and say hello (like I probably should!) but I do so love looking at your pictures.  You have such a way of capturing the moment so that when I look at it I feel like I am standing right there next to you seeing it as you take the picture.  You have a wonderful gift and I thank you for sharing it with us so often!   ...geri

Myrl,

Everyone that comes to visit Montana shares your opinion with regards to the something special with the open spaces.   They are also surprised at the sky at night with all the stars glowing.   When there are no high rises nor too many bright electric lights, you can't help but notice more of the sky.

Mary,

Thank you for the compliments and for your vote.  It looks like #4 is the winner!  It did not have the bright colors present at sunrise (like in the first 3 photos) but when I saw those interesting bright white clouds, I knew I had to capture the moment.   :)

Cynthia,

And we was not using any small brushes on that day!   :)    I am glad you enjoyed this exhibit and thank you for entering your vote.  According to the votes received so far, it looks like I kept the best one for last.

Geri,

You are welcome to come and look at my pictures any time.   I enjoy coming to your blog to read the words of wisdom.   Photography started as a small hobby and then became a bigger hobby since I moved to Montana.  It is a joy to be able to share the beauty of Red Lodge and of my surroundings with you and the online community.  Thank you for your very kind words!

Marc,

No, I did not forget you!   It look like your like them ALL (the first 3 photos were all taken at sunrise).   The clouds are so thick and noticeable that I can see where you get the volcano idea.  :)

Marney,

Thank you for the rave review!  I am glad you liked photo number 3.   They are all unique but I think Mother Nature used more her color palette and more smaller stokes to do the variations in the sky that are in the shape of a laurel.

Mike,

Thank you.  #4 is the winner with the most votes!    Noticing this special cloud formation immediatley caused me to make a run towards my digital camera.  This is the one that I had to share with the online community but I decided to add a few more photos of cloud formations taken recently with this post.  You can say that I saved the best for last!   :)

Hi Gerry,

I like the first and the fourth. The first because there is so much to look at - the lines of clouds and the lines of trees and colours are really fascinating - not too many colours but they all complement each other, with the snow in between. The big sky and the sweep of the mountain covered in snow looks beautiful. It really would make a great painting.

Your photos are works of art.

Cheers!

David

You don't think Father Nature had anything to do with that, especially the clouds in the bottom picture?

Brenda,

It is possible but I found it difficult to choose and to post just one out of the 4.  So I decided to post all 4 and ask to see which one would be the favorite for those who come visit this post.  It sure is a beautiful place to live and work and the pace of life is much slower than most other cities I have visited and lived in.  Very quiet and serene!
