Meat and PotatoesWith so much emphasis you read about Social Media and its impact on business, the Realtor's job is to meet with people, qualify them, and assist them with a buying or selling transaction of real property. The "money earning" hours are done in performing this task. Think of it as the meat and potatoes of real estate. Sure there is marketing, and web site development, and records filing, but many of these functions are the overhead actions of the business.

Find your customers, sell them on working with you, put your real estate knowledge to work, overcome the business obstacles and CLOSE the business. Meat and potatoes are good. It is what sustains you and brings home the paycheck that leaves you feeling satisfied.

Gary - the meat and potatoes is what sustains us, but adding a piece of chocolate cake makes it even better.

Ok I was doing mildly Ok with the meat and potatoes, I guess I'm hungry - THEN Marilyn mentions dessert! LOL  Gary you are absolutely right on this one. Back to the basics.

Hi Gary, this is certainly ture and we all best make sure we clearly understand it. As you say, the daily function of working with clients is at the end of the day what we rely on for our " making a living". Loved the analogy.

Funny how sometimes people get sidetracked.  Regardless of anything else, the work has to make money so that we can by the steak and potatoes.  I certainly not into a steady diet of Ramen.

Now I want steak and eggs for breakfast! I'm making headway on the update of my main website and have my Posterous site branded, so I'm achieving the 'admin' goals slowly but surely.

I know an agent who could attract customers like bee to honey, but didn't know what to do with them after he did.

I'm a meat-and-potatoes kinda person, too, Gary. I like the face-to-face interaction with clients. Met a buyer at a home that closed yesterday to give him the key. I didn't have to be there because the seller still has possession for another 24 hours and could have given the buyer the key. But I wouldn't dream of missing out on this important part of the transaction.

Happy Halloween to you, and thanks for the Halloween jokes this morning!

Great analogy.  I also like Marilyn's idea of adding the chocolate cake and those sweet extras to make our business even better.

Gary, not only is it the meat and potatoes, it's the part that I truly love about my career.

Gary, what about if someone is a vegetarian? Tofu and potatoes? Fish and rice? Regardless, you are right, you can go to all the real estate schools in the land, get all the coaching but it still comes down to effective relations with your client and your ability to listen!

GREAT post, Gary.............. I LOVE it.............

The way you put things in this post and what you say PLUS the qualifying items you
pointed out were key to the "whole ball of wax" in real estate....

Or as you so rightly put it.... they are the "Meat and Potatos" of the business.

AWESOME post!!

=-)

Gary

Great post for these times. I am beginning to notice some agents spending less time on the basics and too much on the promotion. Got to find equilibrium.

So true - sometimes we get caught up in the frou frou of online marketing - have dessert first and forget the meat and potatoes!

I am a steak and baked potato kind of gal with a piece of chocolate cake and ice cold milk for dessert. Hmmm wonder what Gary likes for dessert. <SMILE>

Hi Gary,

Taking care of the people is the "meat and potatoes" of my practice.

great reminder, the old saying come in to the office, sit downget the appointment, this all requires talking face to face and doing real estate the way it has been forever.  the internet has changed our  business like nothing else but the basics need to be in place in order to close the deal.

And often it may be meat-loaf...that is not fancy or exciting...but hard work and consistency. Simple thing like getting started at 830?? or EARLIER, returning phone calls (I just can't believe the people that don't), looking like a professional and acting like one and Horror of Horrors...know your numbers... Good post Gary!

Yes There is no magic pill , if you are fortunate enough to have the capital you can buy your business to a degree. However  wall caledners and fridge magnets are not going to do it. You have to make contacts.  Sounds like you  are a mike ferry Man?

Being only 27 its hard for me to imagine how people did business back in the 80's and early 90's without computers, GPS & PDA's. Every social networking event I go to is just other agents looking to drink and hang out and no actual clients are there. I beleive that real estate and networking have moved online to allow 1 person to now meet 1000 people at once instead of just one at a time. The problem is that information is so readily available you know have to meet 100 people to get 1 client as opposed to meeting just one person and getting a client back in the day!

Gary - Yes, one of the reasons I have cut back on social media is because I realize I need to be on the phone more and meeting people in person while also taking time to preview homes and know my local market.  That is a full plate of meat & potatoes right there.
