Prostate Cancer Men, Listen Up!

I am going to be your virtual, nagging wife. (The names have been changed to protect the innocent).

Why is it you guys procrastinte to get to the doctor for a yearly exam? What is the big deal? You know you have to do it so why refuse to do it? Is peeing in a cup too much for you? Scared of needles?

Almost 2 years ago, my former boss was diagnosed with PROSTATE CANCER. That was AFTER me and his girlfriend were NAGGING him for months to make a doctor appointment because he casually said one day he hadn't been to a doctor in 6 years. "I'll go to a doctor when I don't feel well".

Yeah, whatever you say. It's your DEATH WISH. "I'm fit Jackie. I'm fine". That's right John, you are invincible. Nothing bad could ever happen to you. I would expect that answer from a teenager, not a 62 year old man. And the kick in the pants is, CANCER runs like wildfire in his famiy on both sides. He didn't smoke or drink. I wonder why.

He makes an appointment for a long, overdue, overhaul. A week later he gets a call that his PSI levels are up. Doesn't always mean anything bad, but he had to get re-tested in 6 weeks.

6 weeks later John goes for his re-testing. A few days later, he gets a call that his PSI levels were higher than the 6 weeks before.

Doctor wants to do a BIOPSY. John gets BIOPSY. 4 days later John finds out he has stage 1 PROSTATE CANCER. I expected it because I'm a realist. His girlfriend on the other hand, was extremely upset as you can imagine. Oh, wait, you can't imagine that because YOU DON'T GO TO THE DOCTOR! If you cared enough about yourself and your better-half, you would go.

Doctor tells John his options and decides to have his PROSTATE REMOVED. John goes to hospital and gets his PROSTATE REMOVED. John is in the hospital for a few days and goes home to recouperate. John doesn't have the usual "side effects" of having a PROSTATE REMOVED so far. John gets his PSI levels tested every 3 months and comes out clean according to his girlfriend.

John has his PROSTATE in a glass jar (for real) to remind him to go to his doctors for his yearly check-ups.

John got LUCKY.

How lucky are you?
