Fox News Poll: Most Blame Bush for Economy

By David Weigel 10/30/09 9:58 AM

Here's a somewhat surprising result from the new Fox News poll. Asked which president is "more responsible for the current state of the economy," only 18 percent say President Obama. Fifty-eight percent say former President George W. Bush. Nine percent blame both of them. Republicans are the only subgroup of voters who blame Obama, and only by a six-point margin of 35 percent to 29 percent.

What's striking about this is that the numbers have only marginally gotten worse for President Obama in the three months since Fox News last asked this question. In July, it was 16 percent who blamed Obama and 61 percent who blamed Bush. That is, needless to say, not what Fox News viewers hear when they tune into the network. But it's essential to understanding why the president remains popular and why Republicans are failing to really capitalize on economic gloom.

What other conculsion would a sane person come too. He had control of economic policy for 8 years. It happened on his watch with no appearant warning...so Obama inherited this mess which took a decade to create ( it started at end of Clinton term). It will take years not months to turn around. Folks with brains know this.

Yes we all know the problem really started long ago. You can't create a mess this big overnight and you sure cn't clean it up with a bounty towel of tax money either.

I'm sorry but this problem is far deeper than the last 2 Presidents.  It actually began in the 1930s when Government decided it could do things better than the Private Sector.  It escalated in the 1960s with another massive increase in Government entitlements followed by President Richard Nixon's decision to remove our currency from the gold standard.  Bottom line is that there's enough blame to spread around every President since Calvin Coolidge and the quicker we move on from Partisan politics and focus on what needs to be done to get us out this mess the better.

Craig, I think one only needs look at what the "private sector" has done to this country in the past three decades, to see that the private sector is only concerned with the corporate bottomline, not the people, in anyway, shape or form.

If  you really want to know it's roots, it didn't start under Bush, Clinton, Bush, Regan or any of the modern era presidents.  Precident was set under FDR.

HOWEVER, while much of the current economic mess can be attributed to the Bush Presidency (and think of all the new and creative things that happened to this country under Bush) some things are carryover from Clinton (FannieMae and Freddie Mac come to mind) and many things that are being done NOW are going to continue to drive the economy down (remember, we were promised that if we did NOT do this huge STIMULUS package, unemployment would go to 10%....and?).

One of my favorite radio guys on money management, Dave Ramsey, has it about right.  You can not SPEND your way out of a hole.  That's the theory in place right now.

Ron,

i always appreciate your well versed and thought out comments on my post..

Even though we almost always disagree it is always my pleasure to see you on my comment threads.....

I do agree with your comment today  ....

BUT.......

The problem still exists, no matter how true the facts are that Obama is being slammed, dragged, bagged and violated for NOT having got us out of this mess in 10 short months......

i will NEVER have an understanding for this happening......McCain could not or would not have done any better....

this rant is not directed at you personally.........

Just sayin'

It's deregulation that caused this. Just ask Greenspan. The greed component in human nature will devour itself if left unchecked.

Linda Mae, I must say you really do a thorough reasearch on so many topics.  Thanks for keeping us all informed.  It is difficult to comment on all of them.  So will thank you for all of them herein.  It is surprising that a Fox News poll would have this result.  So not everyone out there is so unreasonable after all.  It's pretty obvious Obama did not create our economic problem.  I think Nogui hit it on the head.  Many of those holes that allowed this to happen, have not yet been closed.  Not too many people pushing this issue, unfortunately.
