You are living your dream....

You have researched, studied, and practiced practiced and practiced your skills. So you are ready to open your business or are you? Let's see if you are....

This isn't the fun part but it is mandatory. A Successful business has a great product AND a effective office.

As the owner, you are responsible for all legal aspects of your business.(Here are a few)

  • 1.Corporate/ Legal and Tax Matters- Hopefully you have your tax adviser and legal professional help you plan and carry out all required matters for corporate and tax matters.

Some of these items might be:

Deciding and filing for your new corporation (Federal, State and local)

Choosing your name

Business Structure- S corp, LLC etc

Financing

Taxes set up

Obtaining required permits, licenses and approvals

Setting up and organize your bookkeeping process

Open Bank account

  • 2. Insurance- I have liability insurance and coverage for my inventory of furniture and accessories. Please discuss with your insurance provider all of the possible scenarios that our field needs to cover.  Do not think "I will get insurance when I have the money" I waited and unfortunately was reminded when a fellow stager (uninsured) had her items stolen. The fellow stager got insurance the next day and so did I. I was lucky but you might be the unlucky one.

  • 3. Have your personal finances covered for 6 months- So you can concentrate on your biz not personal bills

This should keep you busy for a little while. But it is not over yet. There are many areas that a business owner must keep on top of.

The next blog will be about organizing and setting up your office and paper work.

Please include your thoughts and suggestions as established business owners

Thanks,

Leslie

Leslie -- your list is a good start for new stagers.  Would you consider adding it to the Real World Home Staging for Newbies group?

Thanks, Leslie - these are all important points to remember.  Also.... I'd suggest developing a marketing plan from day one.  I have certain tasks I do each day of the week to market my business.  You can have the greatest design talent and skills in the world, but if you can't market yourself, you don't have a business.  I'm looking forward to the next edition.  BOO!!

Barb, Thanks for adding your tip!  I definitely agree with you. I have weekly time permanently set aside for my marketing plan, books and other admin tasks. Have fun like a child tonight :) (without the stomachache)

One of the best books you can read on the subject for any small business owner is called The E Myth Revisted by Michael Gerber. It really opens one's eyes to the reality of being a business owner.  I'm almost glad I didn't read it before starting this biz cause it may have scared me out of it!

Great points Leslie!

Thanks for the tip Karen. I will pick it up tomorrow!

Glad you started your business before reading it. Staging Industry  would not be the same without Your talent in it.

Thanks, Leslie

Leslie, the peson who is a talented stager with no previous business experience has a longer road to success IF they don't get some business training.  And you are giving a bit of reality here.  Thanks for your help educating new stagers as to what it takes.

Thanks Terrylynn- As you do, I enjoy sharing what I have learned (sometimes the hard way lol) along the way.

I agree a talented business owner has to have a great product/service and business skills to succeed. Without either, the biz owner will probably be out of business. (Good Luck is needed too)

I concur with Karen's vote for "E-myth revisited" it's an amazing book....we cant' be the master of all effectively. This book helps make a path clear.

Great post
