Are you paranoid? I am and for a very good reason.

My stepson was in town for a couple of days this week attending a law conference.  He treated us to dinner Tuesday night and shared some stunning news. He said a former law partner had died the day before of complications from the H1N1 virus.  The attorney had become sick 10 days before, slipped into a coma, and died from complications of pneumonia.  I googled for more information on the virus in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and found that 155 people have been diagnosed with H1N1 and 11 of those have died.

I have been unable to find numbers for H1N1 in San Antonio but we are being cautious.  I made an appointment to get the pneumonia vaccine but had to cancel that; now we are getting it on Wednesday.  We are mostly staying home, avoiding crowds.  Yesterday I went to the bookstore but wore gloves while handling books.  We are members of a very large church so I am thinking about not attending services for a while.  I will still hand out candy tonight although my husband thinks we may not have many trick-or-treaters because of H1N1.  I will wear a mask and drop the candy in containers rather than letting the kids get their own.  We still have to go to the grocery store... so if you see someone shopping while wearing a mask and gloves, that will probably be me!

I am not fearful of the H1N1 from what I have read the older folks do not have as bad a time with the flu.

Shirley, That really is a wake up call.  Even with everything in the news, we tend to get a little complacent about anything happening to us.

LOL, You don't look old to me, Tim!  This attorney who died was 54 and in excellent health.

Hi Susan, When you are young you think you are invincible but I am at the age where I am more realistic.

Shirley I got the regular flu shot, Ceil doesn't take any shots; still undecided about the H1N1. I think the main thing is to try and stay away from crowded areas.

I had something in early September that I thought might be swine flu.  It wasn't too bad but I was puny for well over a week.  I wonder if you can get it more than once?  I've been careful about washing my hands but haven't really worried much......maybe I should be more cautious.

Hi Shirley - I think we're all hearing horror stories about this flu. I heard on the news the other day something I thought was interesting - they said the seasonal flu hasn't even hit yet - which means all the cases of the flu so far have been H1N1. I wonder if it's true?....

Shirley - It makes you wonder why a healthy person can not fight off the flu.  No, I don't think you are paranoid.  I have been carrying the hand sanitizer, and use it every time I get into the car  especially after showing houses and touching the door knobs.  I even offer to my clients.

Wow, It is a very dangerous virus.  I hope I don't get it.  I may have but I never went to get diagnosed.  I already had the flu shot, and 3 or 4 weeks later I came down with a monster headache and the flulike syptoms lasted a week or two

Shirley, that is terrible news!  I haven't been that concerned about it, now maybe I should be.  It seems the most important thing to do, would be to go to a doctor, or at least call, if you think you have it?  I had to laugh, at least if you go to the store tonight with a mask and gloves, people will just think it's part of your Halloween costume!  Happy Halloween, Shirley!  Stay well :-)

Hi Shirley,

I guess I'm still in the invincible crowd, not fearful yet.  I just pray it never hits close to home!

Shirley

Only 300 doses of the vaccine have made it here in  our area. This flu is already rampant here and you just have to ride it out about a week or so.  A expert from TAMU spoke to ouir Rotary Club and suggested not using alcohol based hand gels  and to instead use cold water and any soap will do fine. Why? The oil on our skin helps protect us.

Howdy there Shirley

Booooooo to ya, my friend!

Did not see one Trick or Treater out here in Charlestown, NH. This is the very first year, that we have not had any kids stop by on Halloween night. It sure was a sad thing to have happen.

I've been finden out about alot of cases up here of the H1N1. Maybe I'm wrong, but with everything I've seen and been though in my life. I just can't get paranoid over things anymore.

I can not caution people enough about door knobs. I have been opening them with the tip of my pinkie only or using the courtesy of others so that I don't have to touch the doors.

Also, touch your face as little as possible and use sanitizer when you are back in your safe zone.

C&C, Stephen refuses to get a flu shot and now that I finally decided to get one, every place seems to be out of the vaccine.

Glad you are feeling better, Ann.  We should all be careful.

Debi, I think other cities have been hit harder than San Antonio so far.

Sharon, I carry the hand sanitizer and use it.

Hi Dan, Sounds like you have had enough of being sick already!

Hi Greg, Thanks! It was about time he treated us... LOL... we usually do the treating but that's ok; he's great!  Your little cutie is growing up fast! btw, I like hugs!

Mary, I did wear the gloves to the store and once inside I put on the mask.  I was getting lots of looks and Stephen was making fun of me so I took the mask off... haha

Kathleen, The young always feel invincible but I'm sure you will be ok and I probably will too...

Trey, No flu vaccine to be found in the Alamo city.  I wash my hands like I have OCD.  :o)

Haha, Kathy... I love kids more than anything but they do spread germs...

Dale, I'm sorry you missed out on the fun of handing out candy to the little ones and you may have the right attitude about not being paranoid.

Sabrina, Door knobs freak me out.  I find creative ways to open them...

Shirley,

I heard wearing a mask only protects others from you.  A mask does not prevent others from infecting you.  So you might not need one.  Google it.

I had the worst flu ever in my life started Thursday in the middle of the night.  I could not believe it.  I was fine all day Thursday, then suddenly I thought one of my vital organs was failing.  I'm not joking.  I could not even leave my bed on Friday (except for the ladies room,,,yuck)  it was no good.

Finally ate my first meal yesterday late in the evening.  I'm telling you, even if it is not the swine flu, it is bad.

Glad to say, by the grace of God, I feel fine today and was able to eat normally and clean the home.

I'm surprised HEB is still offering food samples, talk about an easy way to get sick!

You can also wipe down your cart with the free wipes they have outside the store.  I think nail salons are another flu breeder, I'm staying away.  I'll do my own pedicure, thanks very much :)

Sorry to hear you were so sick, Melissa.  Yes, HEB is still handing out samples and I thought the same thing about it.  Glad you're feeling better!

I heard on the radio the other day that there has been a big increase in children's deaths from the flu this year compared to last. Parents should make sure that their kids at least get the vaccine, since they are at high risk along with pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.

Cheers,

Robin

I prefer not to hide or become paranoid, but I do get a flu shot each year, and I'll get the swine flu shot, too. I just think that when it's my time to go, it's my time to go.

This is a very scary thing.  I know of one person who has died from H1N1 - the reason was that he didn't get the prescription filled.  Apparently one of the major reasons otherwise healthy people are dying is for failure to fill the prescription.

If ya get H1N1 - don't slack off on this piece, it's important.
