My owner is a home inspector in San Diego.I grew up in the generation that was somewhat mesmerizied by war movies, spy movies, and spaghetti westerns. Our movie stars were John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery, Al Pacino, Burt Lancaster, Jimmy Stewart, Marlon Brando, Robert Redford....

I always liked those war movies, especially the ones that involved the huge Navy ships and submarines. Even now I like them, and one of my favorite (fairly) recent movies was "The Hunt for Red October" starring a non-James Bond and very dignified Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, and a non-Darth Vader James Earl Jones.

Yesterday was a Santa Ana day, resulting in high winds coming out of Nevada and Utah and blowing to the west, keeping the marine layer clouds out to sea, so it was a very clear day. Since it was my anniversary, I headed over to Cabrillo National Monument which has the best views of San Diego that you'll ever see. You've just got to make time to go there when you come for the 2009 NAR Convention in November.

Following is what I was treated to yesterday at Cabrillo. I was the happiest person out there!

Coast Guard tug boats and submarine in San Diego bay

Even though I've watched it in the movies so many time, to see people actually standing on a submarine as it was moving through the water was exciting.

The two orange boats are Coast Guard tug boats, and the little orange boat in the last picture is a Coast Guard speed boat that was keeping gawkers away from the submarine as she came into San Diego Bay.

Right below Cabrillo is a Navy submarine support base which is where the Coast Guard tugboats took the submarine:

Very cool pictures Russel,

Yes I do remember growing up to the old Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns.  Remember the old John Wayne movies?  Sean ruled as the calm cool Russian submariner!

Russel:  What a neat scene to be present for.  This is something I am confident saying I will never see.  I don't live anywhere near where a sub would surface.

Great pictures Russel.  You have sure given people a great tip for a place to visit for the NAR Convention.  If you ever get a chance to take some pics of any of the carriers that come into port I would love to see them.

Russel - The movie is one of my favorites also. I even have a mink hat, with the naval decoration exactly like the one worn by Sean Connery wore in the beginning of the movie. I bought it in Prague just after the fall of the Soviet Union. It's warm in winter, but does get a few stares : )

Hey, Larry - I still watch the old movies on AMC and wherever else I can find them. My friends make fun of me since many of the old John Wayne movies are in black and white.

Hey, Chris Ann - I see the subs in port all the time, but I've never seen one under way, especially with people standing on it while it was moving. That just seems dangerous.

Hey, Carl and Ceil - I presume you actually mean "Operation Petticoat," starring Tony Curtis.

Hey, Myrl - Have you taken over as Sean's personal assistant? LOL. Anyway, thanks for the update.

Hey, Steve - I'm always on somebody's list, so that's no big deal to me. LOL

Hey, Jim - You, Maria, and Josh could always come out here on vacation!

Hey, Lou - And I hope to meet you when you're here!

Hey, Bruce - If I can catch up on my newspaper reading so that I'm current, I'll be able to get pictures. I'm wanting to get the Ronald Reagan coming or going. She just got back a couple of weeks ago.

Hey, John - The older Sean Connery gets, the more I like his movies, but I've always been a fan.

Hey, Terry - Thanks for visiting again. See you soon at your place.

Hey, Ann - Glad to see your children are watching some classics instead of some of this stuff that makes it to the movie theaters nowadays.

Russel,

What great pictures! I think it would be so interesting to see people standing on a submarine in real life. It always looks neat in the movies, but somehow real life is just better. Was there something wrong with it, or just routine maintenance?  Thanks for sharing your fun day!

Great photos, Russel.  As a teen, I always heard about going up to Lake Matthews to watch the "submarine races".  It was a great makeout point.  Imagine my surprise the first time my boyfriend took me there and there were no submarines to watch.  (It's a popular makeout spot around these parts).  I've been in a submarine before (perk of being the daughter of a Navy guy) but I've never seen people actually standing on it while it was running through the water.  That's so cool!
