sandcastle sandcastle sandcastle

After building this sandcastle one afternoon at the beach (South Padre Island, TX), I went to the house to get cleaned up and realized I had no photos of the creation.  I grabbed my camera, tripod and flashlight and headed out.  When I got there I was surprised that no one had knocked it down yet.  It's something about sandcastles that makes it too tempting to smash.  I took a series of photos using a 30 second shutter and ONE flashlight.  I think it made for some pretty interesting photos.

Wow - how long did it take to make it?  Did you have any help?

That's incredible! Obviously you've done this for contests too? Do you have pictures of other ones you've made? I can barely get a shape out of an upside down pail.

Lee:  I am so impressed ... you made the sandcastle.  I would have called the local news station and got some Halloween publicity from it.

The sandcastle is not only an amazing creation, but the flash light provided a great light source to capture it in the photos.

daughter with sandcastle

Here's my daughter standing in front of our family entry last year.

Finished entry.

This year's contest was October 17th, but the red tide was so bad and the waves kept coming up until everyone's castle was washed away after seven hours of work and just before judging.  No photos.

The castle in this blog post took about 2 or 3 hours and a friend of mine wanted to try her hand at it so she carved the faces.  Otherwise it was a solo creation.

Thanks Myrl, I was more excited about the lighting techniques than the castle myself.

I don't know why people would want to smash such a work of art.  In my area, people admire and photograph them while being careful not to disturb.  Great job!

Absolutely incredible! It takes alot of patience and talent to create something like this - too bad there isn't a way to make it permanent. The flashlight idea was very effective!

Where did you position the flashlight for that last photo? Really nice effect.

You have a lot of talent, Lee.  It would take a small minded person to destroy such a beautiful creation that you made.  Thanks for sharing those pictures.

Q:  Where did you position the flashlight for that last photo?

A:  I walked around the mote holding the flashlight about 3-4" from the ground, then around the castle again shining at the top, and then behind the castle through the arches.  You probably didn't expect that I'm in the photo, but because I kept moving, I'm not seen.

Hello Lee, that's some great creativity with both the sand, the camera and the light.  Love it!  John

Really creative use of ummm, yourself. Is that a very slight 'ghost' of you just to the right of the castle?

You guys are too kind.  Thank you.

Julia, it could be.  I think I cloned a foot out that got a little light spilled on it.
