No More Sugar

Gay and Robinson, our last sugar producer on Kauai, clebrated their final harvest yesterday.  They had been producing that sweet stuff for over 100 years and the celebration was mixed with saddness.  Two other sugar producers had exited the business in previous years and now there are none.  Kauai still maintains extensive agrucultural lands and hopefully a new use will be found so that they don't just grow up in weeds.

I do recall seeing lots of sugar fields the last time we were on Kauai(long time ago).  I would imagine a lot of developers would be very interested in the land for housing.

Hi Sharon,

The developers will be very frustrated because we have very strong zoning laws and our leaders want land to remain agricultural, even if there is no viable agricultural use of the lands.  I don't see that changing in my lifetime.

Hi Toula.  I think it's accurate to say that there is more agricultural land than residential on Kauai.  New crops are needed to replace sugar and one is coffee.

Richard.....interesting and sad, too.  It's like so many places in Illinois...where there used to be farms and now there is a sea of houses instead.

Hi Debra.  There is a major difference here and that is the land will not be used for houses but will grow up in weeds.  I make no judgment as to which is preferable.
