Have you ever wanted to really emphasize a point in your post and bold or colored text wasn't enough? Here's a quick way to highlight text with just a little HTML code.

This is a screenshot of the first and last paragraphs of this post in Draft:

How to highlight text on your ActiveRain blog

Open the post in Edit mode, and click on the HTML tab. Now it will look like this. I've underlined the text I'm going to highlight in red.

Place the HTML tag <span style="background-color: yellow;"> at the beginning of the text you want to highlight, and the tag </span> at the end.

That's all there is to it! If you want to continue editing in WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) mode, you must first save the draft and then reopen it before changing to WYSIWYG.

Used sparingly, highlighted text is a great way to add a punch of color to your post. And if you're more adventurous then basic yellow, here's a list of 140 HTML color names. Have fun!

That was helpful John!  I've wondered how to highlight in colour! Now maybe you can do a post on HOW to DO a SCREENSHOT?  lol

Hi Liz - On a PC, hold down the ALT key while pressing the Print Scrn key (which on my keyboard is just to the right of F12). That copies the screen to your clipboard, and then you can paste it into your favorite image program for editing.

For a Mac I believe it's Command + Shift + 3.

John - This is a great tip, along with the list of colors. Gotta put this somewhere where I won't forget it, altho the HTML is pretty simple.

Jeff - Once you use this, you can always refer to the code in that post for the tags.

Liz - The clipboard is just a kind of 'temporary memory' in your PC. When you take a screenshot, it copies it to the clipboard. It's the same if you copy a section of text. The clipboard can only hold one item at a time. So if you take a screenshot and then copy text, when you go to paste only the text will be available.

Theodora - Thanks! Hope this helps your blog.

Thanks.

I might use it occasionally,

Sparingly... there are some on AR who know how to do it who use it too much IMHO.

moderation in all things....

John - now I remember ... why is it when you want to do something you can't remember how but as soon as someone starts to talk about it it comes back to you.

I take stuff like this and paste it into a Word Document, saved as an HTML file, whenever I run across it.

My Word Document has quite a few of those type tags saved in that document!

I feel like I just learned my first word in a foreign language:  HTML.

Wonder where they speak that anyway.

John HTML has always been intimidating to me. This doesn't look too difficult. I'll have to try it tomorrow when I post again. Thank you.

Wow, John!  This one requires a bookmark so that I can use it (sparingly) when I feel the need (or desire) to emphasize something!  :-)  Thank you for the information...as I am HTML challenged.

Thanks John,

I've always been afraid of HTML.  I always think I'm going to mess something up big time.  But this, I may be able to handle.

Now how do I change the font and color???? I have IE.
