My Halloween memories go back to 1964-1973. I remember in the early years, we'd come back home with a bag full of full size candy bars. I kind of remember seeing the bite size candy starting to creep into my bag around 1970.

Last night, my kids came home with nothing but bite size and mini size candy.

It made me wonder about what has changed?  I grew up in a very blue-collar middle class area in Pennsylvania.  Now I live in a much more white-collar upper middle class area.

Are we actually poorer than we were in the sixties or are we just more thrifty or less giving?

Like everything else things change for no paticular reason....I remember going out 2 nights every-year...the night before and halloween. 1955-1960 or so. We give the large bars or 2 small bite size..

Hi, Tim. You are absolutely right about the candy! It seems like the bad things are bigger and the good things are smaller..which makes you appreciate the good things all the more.

For me its more about the difference between having 30 kids come to my door vs the 180 that come now :-)

Tim,

This year like in any other year in this nice over 700-unit condo complex nobody knowcked n the door. There are no kids here, and this is not 55+ community. If dogs were trick-a-treating, we would not have enough candies in local stores (LOL)

It is sort of sad.

Growing up in the same era, they didn't have "bite sized" anything.  I know if they did, it would have been out in force.

And now there's so much out about too much sugar.

Yep, the old-style fun is out of Halloween.

Hi Tim ~ I have no memory of the size of the Halloween candy - though I do remember when I was little a regular sized candy bar was a nickel.

For Halloween all the big bags for sale had the minis.  We gave out 2-3 minis per kid and went through loads of candy. I actually *love* mini candy bars - I swear they taste better.  And I tested that theory many, many times last night.

How much sugar does a kid really need?   And I'm with Liz M- if you live in an area where you get LOTS of kids... there would be NO way to give them full size bars.
