Social media

Social Media. How to. What to. When to. Who to.

Have you ever wondered how many Social media experts there are out there? If you do a Google search for "Social Media Experts" you get 80,000,000 results. Holy crap Batman!!

Now I'm sure this figure is waaaay off so let's say there are a million "Social Media Experts". A million people telling us.......

  • How to interact with others online.
  • What to write/post/tweet/update about.
  • When to write/interact/tweet.
  • Who to befriend, become a fan of, linkin with.

If Social Media is about interacting with each other then shouldn't we know this stuff already? Aren't we already social? Don't we interact every day?

Why do I need time to "find my voice"?

If I have to follow guidelines and advice on How, What, When and Who then wouldn't that mean I'm not being myself? Shouldn't we have learned this stuff when we were children?

Here's my advice. Be yourself. Good, bad or indifferent. Be yourself. Quit trying to fake it.

I can tell a fake from a mile away. Can you?

Hun...

Do you know some folks need to be taught how to be themselves? Take for instance sociopaths. They actually mimic a human and have no idea how to be human, how to feel human, when to be human and never mind the who to be human with :)

The ones who really stick in my craw are the so-called 'Social Media Experts' who offer training and teach classes, but have never actually used social media to generate business themselves. Makes the adage true - "Those who can't or don't do it, teach it!"

Bryant - i didn't know we had so many qualified experts at anything, especially something so new. I guess it's time to go on to something else.

We are on the same wavelength BB...I've had it with gurus, experts and all of the "look at me" users who aren't actually selling houses.  I've also become quite skeptical of anyone's claims - probably a good thing, because I've quit signing up for every single thing that someone else writes about.  Not only do we need to be ourselves, but we need to remember that the only magic bullet in real estate is hard work, not how many followers we have.

80,000,000 experts? I guess the whole world truly is a stage.

Please...

Someone look at me. I'm lonely. I haven't sold a house in seven years. What's worse, is I haven't even tried. I'd much rather be a social butterfly :)

BB - I'm bad about faking it - so I do be myself. Nice to see you voicing your opinion on Social Media :)

Hi there BB, well, that was a mouthful! I think I am beyond redemption anyway, what you see is what you get. I know many say they are having great success with social media, twitter, facebook. I tweet my posts, that's it. Oh, I do speak to a cousin sometimes with twitter. And facebook? Well, it's a bit more complicated. I now have 3 farms there, and all these friends who are from AR, one client, a few old friends, but that's that. I have fun there, my farm is my passion, LOL. I don't think that is what I am supposed to use it for.

I don't have a problem being me, I have a problem keeping up with all this crap! I need a better plan, LOL. The only thing I don't enjoy is when people use social media to attack others. That is just not cool. Otherwise, use it how you feel like using it. Let me play Farmville, and I am one happy camper.

Hi BB - I can't imagine anyone trying to tell you and TLW not to be yourselves - you just are you, and that's what we all love about you and TLW!  As for me, I suppose I could have a more strictly professional blog, but it wouldn't be as much fun.  Besides, I do get clients and agent referrals from folks who feel they have gotten to know me from my blog.

Hi BB -  I'm with Andrea, "what you see is what you get" with me.  Some people like me and some people don't and I'm perfectly fine with that.  Quite frankly, it takes too much time and energy to be someone I'm not.  I'm one of those folks who needs to keep it simple otherwise it's not worth my time and energy.

I also agree with Rich about all the "experts".  I have a hard time taking anyone in my industry seriously if they are not working in the trenches everyday like me.  Furthermore, I will never, EVER, take advice from someone trying to tell me how to grow my busines who hasn't originated or closed a loan in more years than I've been in the biz, which is eight years this month.

I think that if there are so many million experts teaching millions of minions...do they actually have time to toot tweet???

There are so many self-proclaimed experts out there that it's crazy. Best to just be self-proclaimed (as you suggest).

BB -

I have a BS detector that is hardly ever wrong, so yes, I hear you!  THIS is the main reason that posting your own content is so important.....posting what others have written SCREAMS itself right off the page and pegs the poster as a "poser" as my kids like to say.

Be. Yourself.

ALWAYS!

Great advice.  Now go put on one of your wife's outfits and make a new video for us.  :)

I'd love to have more advice like this. I have to admit, the constant "rules" get a bit tiresome.

I must have a built in filter.  Whenever someone sends me an email, or I read a post about "You must.." or "You should.." I either by pass it or take it all with more than a few grains of salt..

I've been to several classes relating real estate and social media - blogging, Facebook, Twitter, etc.  It's good to learn the basics of how the make these sites function the way they should.  I just recently set up a Facebook fan page and already have over 100 fans.  But at the same time, I wonder just how many of the social media experts truly know how to make these sites generate income for them.

BB, just looking at all those icons made me want to turn off my computer. How to keep up with so many venues of social media is the question. Wowee! Hope that's not your list!

There are people for whom social networking makes them uncomfortable, not to mention, some people simply cannot write no matter how hard they try. But you're right on target when you advise people to be themselves. Now, some people don't like the fact that I am direct with them, but you know what? I don't care. If they don't want to hear the truth from me, they can go elsewhere.

Being yourself is very important. You can often tell when someone is trying too hard. You can learn to be social, so its okay to hire someone to tell you show to do it. Some people need to know how it works... not the social part, but the application itself. Take twitter for example... its easy to use, but many people insist on having their computer just provide updates. No one wants to follow your computer. They want to follow YOU when you provide your updates and links.

Hi there. You know I have lost business due to my stupid little videos that I have posted on AR. And it didn't bother me at all. I want to work with people that can connect with who I am and how I handle my business. if they want serious all the time then I'm not the guy for them. I like to enjoy my life and my business.

Being yourself will cost you business. But the buisness you get will be abetter fit.
