CONGRATULATIONS

OPP Headquarters Orillia

This year our men in black, the Ontario Provincial Police are celebrating 100 years of patrolling Ontario and keeping us the residents safe. To all 8,900 employees we salute you and thank you for a century of hard work.

The general headquarters of the Ontario Provincial Police, known to us as the OPP, is located in Orillia Ontario Canada and has been since 1995. Here you also find an OPP Museum with all kinds of fascinating exhibits.

October 13, 1909 was the first day that the OPP was considered an active organization with 45 officers and 2 inspectors.

It wasn't until 1910 that the first uniforms were issued. 1922 saw the OPP using motorcycles to patrol the highways but by 1941 new black Chevy coupes replaced them, with radar technology added in 1954 and then breathalyzer systems in 1956.

Black & White Cruiser changed to new all white cruiserOntarians quickly became familiar with the black and white cars, but in keeping with the times in 1989 they were replaced with an all new white cruiser.

The Black and White OPP Cruiser is back. However, with a new chief onboard in 2007, the old familiar black and white cruiser was back on the highways replacing the white cruisers as the fleet was re-newed.

Eyes in the skies in the form of a Cessna 206 equipped with a state-of-the-art glass cockpit and camera system; hash marks on the pavement and cruisers on the shoulder were added as a new resource to its traffic management in 2008!

It took until 1974 before women were recruited to the force as police officers.

After a century of policing, the Ontario Provincial Police is one of North America's largest deployed police services with now more than 5,900 uniformed officers, 2,600 civilian employees plus 850 auxiliary members, serving a province with more than 12 million people, one million square kilometers of land, over 110,000 square kilometers of waterways and more than 130,000 kilometers of provincial highways.

You better tell no lies here because the OPP is considered a world leader in the field of forensic polygraphy.

To OUR men in black of the Ontario Provincial Police, who entertain us at community events with their Golden Helmet Precision Motorcycle Team, distinctive plaid tartan and Ontario Provincial Police Pipes & Drum band, as well as protect us, we offer you congratulations on your milestone, our true respect for your dedication and our heartfelt thanks.

Thanks George, you got that right, they have a big job to do patrolling our major highways err, freeways to you! Funny how when you are wearing heavy shoes you do not want to see them in your rearview mirror, but when in trouble, they are a wonderful sight coming up behind you!  Think our Yanks did an outstanding job last night, did they not?  This is a great series.

Hey Gerry thanks.  Always respected our men in black, then blue then black again.  From what we hear they are much happier in their black uniform than they were in their blue one.  Seems they were out in full duty today, we spotten them all over for some reason and they were always busy!  Have a great night and don't forget your clocks!

Congrats to the OPP .... as much as I hate seeing their cherry lights in my rearview mirror (not that I have - oops, have I just jinxed myself, knock on wood), I'm glad they are out there protecting us. Great blog; filled with lots of interesting facts!!!

Hi Al and Peggy - I never liked the new style OPP cars as they were not distinctive and just blended in with the other cars on the road.  I'm glad the black and white cruisers were brought back.

Great to see them getting the recognition they deserve so much.  Now how about a pay raise for them!

Marc we agree with you like the OPP's black and white ride much better...we can catch them much better!

They do deserve that Erby, 'danger' pay for sure our highways  freeways can get really busy!

Thanks Chris, it was worth the drive, if you know what we mean.....

Nicely written. I like the black and white better also.  It makes them stand out from all the community cruisers.

Very well written summary of the 100 years.  I like the black and white, but I must admit that the other car blended in much better and probably caught more people who couldn't see them coming. :)  Of course if it ever happens to me, I'll be glad they're black and white. :)

Hi Irene!  Hope all is well at your end!  Yes, the OPP deserve the spotlight, they serve and protect us well!

Looks like the consensus is old black and white Jenny.....old Fantino knew what he was doing!

Researching this Sylvie, we were quite astounded at all the facts to be honest with you!  Maybe they did catch more when they blended in, your are probably right.  But they are tricky guys at times, the way they can hide those black and whites.

Good to know the history. Very well summarized. There has been recent changes, the size of the roof top flashing light is very thin now.

Oh did not notice that Sham, will be watching the next black and white when it goes by!

It is important work Jim, we know when they are issuing a ticket to you its not a happy moment, but in reality, what would we do without them?

I appreciate medical, fire, and police personnel everywhere, but I only made it to the second paragraph in your post. Now I can't get OPP by Naughty By Nature out of my mind.

P.S. And I don't even like the song. Thanks a lot!
