On Saturday, my wife and I went on the Whatcom Horticultural Society's Tour of Private Gardens. This is an annual event that hilights private gardens in Bellingham and other communities in Whatcom County. This years tour was the 21st annual. There were five gardens in the tour (self guided), all in more rural areas of the county this year. The garden styles ranged from a very wild forest garden to a very formal, professionally designed garden. I personally tend to prefer wilder looks over the formal. The following are a few pictures from the tour.

This is the stump of an old growth Western Red Cedar. The holes you see are notches were the fallers put springboards to get high enough on the stump to cut the tree. This goes back to the days when trees were felled with axes.

I inserted this photo just because I thought this was a unique use for funeral vaults. The owners of this garden are very tall, so they wanted their raised beds to be easy to reach.

Manmade water fall that looks pretty natural. At the bottom of this small stream was a natural pond containing large Rainbow Trout (looked to be about 18 to 20 inches long)
The tour was enjoyable. It is always fun to see what other people are doing with their gardens. Styles don't always excite me, but I enjoy everyone's creativity.
I hope you enjoy these photos.
Thanks for looking.
