Get Verizon's wireless network at more than 50% off.  I heard about Straight Talk in a blog the other week and checked it out.  It sounded like a great deal so I switched from Verizon.

Tracfone buys blocks of time from Verizon and resells it using Walmart as it's marketing arm.  So you get the quality of the Verizon network but at a bargain price with no contract to tie you down.

I've been with Verizon for years now and I figured that this is a no brainer.  I was paying Verizon $99/month for unlimited talk.  Text would have been an additional $10 and data an additional $10.  With Straight Talk, I get unlimited talk, text and data.  I guess the only negative might be that the phone selection is limited and there isn't any big discount on the phones.  I just had a very basic phone so the Razor, $99,  was a step up for me.

The switch over was pretty easy. I went to Walmart and bought my phone and service plan.  I logged onto Straight Talk and keyed in some numbers along with my current Verizon account number.  In seconds, my current phone number was ported over to my new phone.  I had to make a simple call to activate it and I was done.  I quickly set up a new voice mail messege and I was back in business.  It took me maybe 5 minutes to get it all up and running.

Fifteen minutes of work could save you a lot on your cell phone bill.

Tim,

Data was only an additional $10?  Do you get email on your phone?  Can you search the web?

This sounds interesting to me.

It does sound interesting, but almost too good to be true! What is the catch?

You said you had to enter your current Verizon account number, does that mean you have to be a current Verizon user to get this deal?

Tim - I heard the same thing about straight talk last week. Too bad I just renewed my contract with AT&T last month.

Tim,

Very interesting. I am so tired of my exorbitant bill from AT&T, with $30 for data plus all other charges. This $45 plan, how much then you get  in taxes?

Wow...curious to see how the service goes for you.  I'm definitely intrigued, but like Jon....what's hidden?  Maybe nothing.

Would be curious to see your answers to the questions.  I don't think you can surf the web or get email on a razor, but I could be wrong!  What kind of data plan do you mean?

This plan is for someone like me who just had a cheap phone fromVerizon.  It's not for Blackberrys and such.  I never had texting and a data plan before so I really don't know much about using those features.  From what I've seen so far, using the internet on a Razor phone is not worth the trouble.

I had been paying $99/month for unlimited talk from Verizon.  On that plan that I had, a text message would cost me 20 cents. I could have had 500 texts/month for an additional $10/month but I chose not to get that because I haven't jumped into texting yet.

With Straight Talk, I pay $45/month for unlimited talk and unlimited text.  I can get on the internet but like I said, it's not worth the time to try to surf the net on tiny cell phone screen.

Straight Talk is a month to month service. No year long contract.  It uses the Verizon infrastructure so you get the same reception as you would get if you were directly with Verizon.

Terry Lynch- anyone can sign up.  I just happened to currently be with Verizon so I didn't have to worry about getting different reception than what I am used to.

Do your own research and see if it can save you some money.

Tim, Thanks for the info. I'll be checking this out. I've got a really old Nextel plan that is only $10 for 1000 anytime minutes, but when I add the data plan and voice mail it comes to about $60 a month.  I need more minutes anyway, so this sounds like a good option.
